Question Starter Rifle for my 6 year old

I am looking for a .22 single shot bolt action starter rifle for my 6 year old Daughter to learn with safely. When I was little our Dad taught us on a .22 chipmonk bolt action rifle that was sized correctly for little kids to learn marksmanship. Does anyone make a modern rifle that is similar for a decent price?

Re: Starter Rifle for my 6 year old

My first gun was a single shot 22 that broke open like a double barrel shotgun. I am not sure what the name of it was but I could hit just about anything with that thing. It was smaller for a child as well.

Re: Starter Rifle for my 6 year old

Here is a good list of them. I would recommend the "Davey Crickett" from Keystone Sporting Arms. The 2nd link will take you to them. Hope this helps

Re: Starter Rifle for my 6 year old

The crickett is pretty cool.

To be honest I would get her a Daisy lever action BB gun. Not the Red Rider since they are heavier. I still have mine from when I was kid. My son used it until he took over my .22 semi auto and now my 6 year old girl shoots the Daisy. It nice because you can shoot it right in the back yard after work, cheap to shoot and she will learn just as much about gun safety with that as she would with a .22lr. She will get use to shooting also.

Re: Starter Rifle for my 6 year old

At age 6, I would think that your little girl has already outgrown the dimunitive proportions of the toy-like Chipmunk/Crickett and others of that ilk. Take a look at the Czech made CZ452 Scout. It's an inexpensive but quality bolt rifle with good iron sights, provision for scope mounting, and a detachable single round magazine which can be replaced with a 5 rounder when you think she's ready.

I've got one around here somewhere that my sons have outgrown, but it will do just fine if grandkids are in my future.

The Cricket is small as is the Chipmunk rifle http://www.roguerifle.com/ . The Cricket is available in pink as well. Savage make some youth models that I wish I would have purchased before the Chipmunk because they have better triggers. I may get one yet. Here is a link www.savagearms.com. Look in the rimfire section.

I'm thinking about the Savage for my Daughters. They look really good and my oldest loves camo so the model in camo would work great for her. Anyway happy hunting.

The Stevens single shot 22 has been reproduced...they are cheap...and fun. There are tons of single shot rifles bolt actions around. See: gunbroker.com auctionarms.com or gunsamerica.com

I've seen one...at a Littlejohn live auction....this is not something I'd usually be interested in...but it was NIB...and on a table next to an original in the shipping box USMC Lyman sniper scope for the 03...so I just glanced over at it.

The scope sold for 4K!

Re: Starter Rifle for my 6 year old

My grandfather bought me a Marlin .22 semi-auto when I was about 6. Was a great little rifle. I still have it, some 30 years later, and it shoots as good today as it did when he first bought it for me. Not as stylish or pretty as my 10/22, but got the job done as a youngster.

Re: Starter Rifle for my 6 year old

Get her a .17 with a bull barrel. Maybe a little heavy but less recoil. Savage make one bolt action with detacable clip. Fun little guns to play around with. Uses same casing as a .22 just longer. They fly faster and farther and very accurate.

Re: Starter Rifle for my 6 year old

I bought my son a Savage bolt action with scope at Walmart, and cut the stock down to fit him. For the money, I wasn't impressed with some of the kid's guns you see out there.
