Son's buck

My son got this little racked 6pt (4pts on one side and 2pts on the other) this weekend on our lease in middle GA, in Upson county. Not his first deer but the first GA buck. He shot it with my 30.06 using my hand loads. I finished out the weekend taking two nice healthy Does' after letting several walk hoping to bring out another buck.

He normally shoots a Marlin .44 Rem Mag lever gun with open sights but this fella was at about 100 yards which is far for that rifle so I handed him my .06 he placed the shot perfect right behind the left shoulder, he fell in his tracks.

Re: Son's buck

Nice!!! Tell the young hunter congrats from the bowhunter on a job well done.

It looks odd to see leaves on your trees this late in the year, our trees are almost bare now which makes it a lot easier to spot deer from a distance.

Our rifle season opens this coming weekend, I will be guiding the wife and daughter so it dosen't look like I will get much hunting time in myself. But then again it's just as much fun seeing them take the deer than shooting it myself. [well almost ] If I could just get them to field dress their own deer I would have it made, lol. BTW I notice his deer hasn't been field dressed yet is there a reason for that? We always gut them where they fall, much easier to drag out of the woods, also gives the Coyotes and Buzzards somthing to work on, in fact the last two deer I killed the gut piles were gone the very next day.

Congrats on your deer as well.

Re: Son's buck

It's weird there with the leaves. The land is located about 70 miles south of Atlanta. The terrain is very hilly and on the higher hills the leaves are still falling but down in the bottoms they are almost gone. Only had one or two light frost also. Down here in Florida the tree's are still in full summer mode.

Club rules say we can't Field dress unless we are the only ones in camp or another reason the deer can't be dragged out. 50% of the time the deer can be driven to with the ATV. If you can't get to it with the ATV there is most of the time more than one person in camp that will help out. One of the slick heads I shot ran down in to a deep hole. I had to dress her in the hole then myself and another man dragged her up with a rope. The walls were to steep to climb with deer in hand and no could a ATV get in there. If I was all by myself I would have ground skinned her and hauled out part one at a time. The biggest reason for no field dressing is Coyote control. The yotes have started coming around so we don't want to give them a reason to be there. We have a designated gut pile that we sometimes hunt over for yotes. It is sometimes more work but in the long run it's a good idea.
