November Musky Trip

Tough trip this time around as weather was constantly changing and Musky's held close to cover lock jawed. Finally got some action on the last day just before it started to snow. Caught a 42 inch Musky in the afternoon.

Camping was actually pleasant as it didn't dip below 20 degrees like in past years. Last year it got down to 5 degrees and was a bit too brisk. Here are some pic's of my trip last week.

Thanks. They are difficult to catch most times. There are a few frenzy periods, ususally the week before or after I make my trip. But that is part of the hunt. If it were as easy as bass fishing, then it wouldn't be as much fun.

I find Musky fishing is really a mental game, paying special attention to lake structure, weather trends, presentation, and having the mental and physical stamina to stay the course. You have to have confidence that where you are throwing to is a calculated high percentage zone. Generally, the crappier the weather, the better your odds are, but poor technique will defeat you.

Called the fish of 10,000 casts is no exaggeration as you can spend days throwing your shoulder out with no results. When you are mentally defeated after days with no action and if you don't have the positive mindset when your opportunity arises, you end up muffing as your technique is lacking, the counter resets, and you start counting casts again for your next opportunity.

Been there, done that...especially during tournaments. Constantly casting until your shoulder hurts.

Yeah, I hear you. I got gashed pretty bad... once. I had my fingers through the underside below the gill on the bottom side of the jaw. The fish goes spastic on me and I am holding it trying not to drop him. Then I freaked as I saw blood on my boat and my hands.

I was very concerned that I had hurt the fish somehow. I couldn't figure it out how it was hurt as I am very careful in how I handle my catch. Turns out I was the one injured and figured out that my finger hold slipped from the bottom jaw and got sideways on the lower teeth. Sacrificed a tee shirt and a little bit of Rum as an anticeptic to get the bleeding under control.
