Turkey Hunting

Today was opening day for turkey season. Perfect morning, got to my ground blind 30 min. before daylight. 8:30 I see movement up on the ridge, darn two does. 9:00 I hear something coming at a walk through the woods, it's a turkey!!! Darn it's a hen!!! 10:00 hear a noise, darn it's my stomach, too many Krystal Burgers the night before. Look through my pack, no toilet paper I'm outta here, barely make it to the house in time.

Get back in the Woods around 3:30 hear hens "yelping" up on the next ridge, give a few soft yelps back and hear she comes!! One old lonely hen she hangs around for awhile and wonders off. Around 4:00 I see movement to my left, two turkeys chasing each other, that gets my heart pounding, darn both are hens must be lesbos. 6:00 hear more yelping, turkeys everywhere!! They come right in front of my blind so close I could almost reach out and touch them, bad part is they are all hens. Sat till twilight nothing more except squirrells.

Oh well no gobblers today but it sure felt good being back in the woods again, i'll give it another go Monday.

Anyone else Turkey hunt?

Re: Turkey Hunting

yeah i am going out with the bow this year heading to cabelas tomorrow to purchase one. Any good suggestions on a blind. Our season doesn't start here til april 24th and you can only hunt til noon. But i usually hunt til noon and then get the fishing gear together and go do some trout fishing.

Here's a hen I saw just a week or so ago. I don't know when season opens around here as I'm not a turkey hunter. I did hear shotguns in that area today, so I have to wonder.

I've been using what's called the "dog house" blind for the past couple of seasons with good success.

Re: Turkey Hunting

Gonna go check out my buddy's ranch this coming Weds... during the fall, when we were up there for hogs, the turkeys were all over the place, almost drove over them and there is enough fallen brush in the area that makeshift blinds can be easily made... It has been all winter since we've been back up there but they should still be there... I'll see if I can get in a shot or two, with my shotty or digital camera...

Re: Turkey Hunting

I use the Cabela's Rifleman blind. Sets up fast and is big enough inside that it's comfortable. Turkey doesn't begin in PA (where I hunt) until the end of April. And we can only hunt until noon.

Re: Turkey Hunting

I love spring turkey hunting, been doing it since I was 13 when my dad first took me.

Went back to my hometown (north FL) the past two weekends to hunt w/ my dad. I've my limit (2) there. I've gotten two also here in Alabama.

Re: Turkey Hunting

I went out last weekend (opening weekend in Brown County Texas). I called in a hen but could not get any toms to come in. Saturday, they would gobble and come in to about 400 yards and then just quit. Sunday they were coming in from all directions, but would quit coming in at about 200 yards. Too early in the season I guess. Not horny enough. At least we heard from lots of toms.

Sounds like your in a great location and have plenty of turkeys. The turkey hunting around here has come to a standstill because of the cold weather. Not necessarily because of no turkey movement but because I'm not willing to freeze my arse off with these unseasonably cold temps.

Good luck to ya, keep plugging away I'm sure you will connect before the season ends.

He called his whole family from the field on his dad's cell phone to tell them....he was HAPPY....I congradulated him but told him there would be no more jakes....longbeards only....
