Do you think a Smith and Wesson 500 Magnum would take down a hog?

smallest caliber? .177
shot placement is key.
I know people that hunt hogs all the time with AR15. If I can ever find a place, I'd like to go, but I'm not sure if I'd bring something powerful, or something quieter.

well i used to raise/kill pigs when i was younger, and we would shoot in between the eyes with a .22 and then have run up from behind and slit it's throat with a knife. It was FAR from a kill with that caliber and placement.

he asked what caliber, not what cartridge... a .22-250 would be better than a .22LR or a .223, no? hehe
Re: Got another hog (Last pic may be a litle graphic)
I guess I could use my bolt gun my first time out...
Speaking of which, its for sale!
Anyone want to buy my Remington Sendero, 7mm REM-MAG? Stainless Fluted barrel, I think its a kevlar stock, original bolt (no internal child lock), approx 100rds fired, with matching scope with sunshade and rings (I think 2.8-10x), remaining ammo, and empty 7mm brass? will ship to your local FFL, or local FTF in DFW area.
Re: Got another hog (Last pic may be a litle graphic)
It really depends, but if you are not real close I would use a .308 or up. A .22, or .17 is fine for a hog in a pin, but not for a loose hog. Less than a 100 yards I would say a .223 would do the job but shot placement will be CRITICAL, and expect to do some tracking. I personally don't like to track a hog, once you are in the brush with him if he is wounded you are in trouble.

I have done this before also, but it was with a tame hog. BTW if anyone wants to try this with a wild hog, I still have him in a pin.

Most states have a minimum of .22 caliber centerfire. Are you sure about the .270 minimum, because that would make alot of rounds illegal. Especially for children, a .270 is a little harsh. I just bought my 8 year old a remington break barrel in 7.62X39, I think this is going to be an ideal deer round for less than 100 yards.

If a game warden catches you hunting deer with anything less than a .270 you get a ticket immediately.
