Remington 7600

I was wondering if anyone had a good/bad opinion about the pump action 30/06? I like the idea of the pump action, since I am a duck hunter.

My uncle had one of these for a while. He liked it until it "scoped him" when
he was shooting at a crow (he did hit the crow if it matters). He sold it and
bought one of the Remington semi-auto's in 30-06 instead. The gas operation
of the semi-auto reduced the recoil, and he hasn't been scoped since.

Don't want to spend that much for a semi-auto. I like pump shotguns, so I figured it would be a good idea. My friend likes it a lot, but then again it is because he is left handed. I figure I would be qicker on a follow up shot with the pump, since I am used to it. Then again, I shouldn't need one. I guess i kind of like the novelty.

The 7600 in 30-06 kicks like a damn mule. I don't know what the difference is [it must be the way the stock is configured] but in the same caliber the felt recoil is much less with the Remington Mdl. 700 bolt action.

I suppose the pump might be a tad bit faster for a second shot as opposed to a bolt action, but the bolt action will be more accurate.

For the money I would buy a good [can you say Remington Mdl. 700] and be done with it.

Rem. semi-autos had many problems in 30-06. it's much better to get one in .308. Since the power level is the same, you can use it anywhere (except with heavy bullets) you would use a 30-06. The .308 plinking ammo is also much cheaper. One problem the pumps and autos have is that the hole for the firing pin is often too big (once in awhile also in the bolt guns). In extreme cases it can jam up either gun. Many swear by them, many swear at them. Buy what you like and either learn from it, or love it!

I have the 7400 semi auto, and I have had it since I was 14, I am now 34. It has never given me any trouble. I now us a browing A-bolt also in .30-06, just because it is alot more accurate. I still really like the 7400 for brush type hunting, I have over and under sights on it and it has taken many many whitetails.

Gotta agree with tnbowhunter on this one, (if only because of his immense experience).

The M 700 Rem has a good reputation, and is usually quite accurate out of the box with most types of ammo.

My family does a lot of hunting up in Maine in the real thick woods. It can be pretty nasty. They all use the 7600 carbine in 30.06. It does kick, but its fast for a 2nd shot, doesn't usually jam, and is short so its easier to get through thick woods. They also modified them to make them light weight. This is nice for days that you cover a lot of miles.

The Benoit brothers are well known deer hunters from Vermont and they often hunt the same areas that my family does in Maine. They also use the 7600 carbine.

I'd use one but I prefer the feel of my Blaser R93 because I dont like the longer reach in the forearm.

7600 is pretty handy little popper. Like said before it does have a nasty recoil as far as a 30.06 goes. I cut my barrel down and trimmed down the stock and made a nice little brush gun out it. Some one wanted it more than me and sold it.

Get yourself a lefty Bolt action, more accurate and more reliable. If you go with Remington change out the factory trigger if hasn't all ready been done.

Are you sure it's offered in .300 win mag? I have not looked, but I can imagine it MIGHT be offered in one of the short mags, but not the .300 win mag. Anyway, it sounds to me like you'd be most happy with the .308. You can get cheaper ammo for it, so you can shoot more often for the same money, and it's available anywhere. It also seems to have enough power for what you want to do...

.30-06, it is available in more bullet weights without having to reload, and has a little less bullet drop and a little more energy. It is also the most widely available bullet out there. You can find them in every store that sells ammo. I think that it is the best all around bullet made. The .300 win mag even if availble will offer no advantages in that gun, just alot more recoil. The 300 win mag drops 5.6 inches at 300 yards with a 150 gr bullet, the .30-06 only drops 7.3 inches. I don't think the 7600 would be accurate enough to make shots out much past 300 yards.
