Re: new pest in my yard

if you don't want to kill him, run a garden hose into the whole and flood him out. Their holes usually have more then one entrance, so you if you are going to try trap him, make sure you plug all the holes except where you have the trap.

I've shot plenty with a 22 short (hollow point is best), if you do shoot him make sure it is a shoulder or head shot, otherwise they will go back into the hole to die and rot.

Re: new pest in my yard

thanks again all the suggestions are good keep em comin. I won't be home tonight to try the ammonia method but will be trying this one first of course. I am keeping notes on the suggestions though.

The whole firepower thing is fun but since I don't live in the middle of nowhere it is not really an option at all. maybe the water thing may work then I could fill his holes in with cement

Not to mention it might not be a good idea for the 9mm around the gas meter...

Ground hogs are sneeky.

If you are still long enough you can wait till they come out and wack them with a shovel. I have had great luck doing this. It's best to stand on the sidewalk/deck so they can't here you though.

The live trap is not a bad idea at all either.

Yep, threw the majority of them in the hole, and spread the remainder around the perimeter of the shed. It stunk pretty bag at first, but it got rid of the GH.

Re: new pest in my yard

Another method is to dig a hole in front of the entrance, then put some peas around it. When the groundhog comes to take a pea, kick him in the hole. This method also works for catching moose.

In Arizona the local animal control would loan you the live traps. We used them for feral cats and then took them to the humane society.

Re: new pest in my yard

This reminds me of when My dad shot a skunk in our wood pile in Colorado. I told him that it would rot under there and stink like crazy but he really wanted to use his gun to kill it. And kill it he did and we lived with it for about a month and a half. We get armadillos down here that do the same thing. They dont live in but its just a place to hide because they are blind and dig alot of them in their territory so they have a place to hide from things that will kill them. There is nothing like a trap and a pond to throw it in after you catch it.
