it is because they were corn fed, that you didn't taste a difference. corn fed livestock does not make for the best tasting meat. Its great feed to use to fatten them up to get to market asap, but not for taste. Grain fed is better.
He's trapping them because he can, plus a ferral pig is a destructive animal that contributes to soil erosion and decimation of indigenous species. He's doing us a favor, its a good thing.
I am as far away from a vegetarian as you can get. I love steak and turkey and chicken. No, I don't believe that slaughter houses are any less cruel, in fact I know they would probably turn me into a vegetarian if I ever went in one. But, the fact that I'm not doing the killing makes a difference to me. If I was lost in the wilderness and had to do it for survival, I wouldn't even hesitate, but to do it when I don't have to, i'd rather not. I guess I just wrongly associated this type of activity with farmers and hillbillies.

On a side note, i know someone who was offered a job in a slaughterhouse for pretty good money (for the level of education he had), and the guy who hired him told him what the job entailed and that there was no commitment and if he couldn't stomach it, quitting was okay. My friend told him it wouldn't be an issue and that he was an avid hunter, yada yada. He lasted two hours before he was totally and completely repulsed and quit. I still laugh at him!

So, what's wrong with being a farmer or a hillbilly?
I see you like to fish, do you practice catch and release or do you somtimes keep a few for the pan?

I'm catch and release only. And I didn't say anything was wrong with being a farmer or a hillbilly, just that usually they are different from suburban and urban folks.
I have nothing against farmers (as I already stated), they are a vital part of our economy and god knows I give them a lot of credit for the long hard hours they put in to keep our pie-holes full. I was simply stating that someone from that type of environment/background has different sensibilities than other people from more suburban/urban backgrounds.

Oh I see. You're probably right, most people who live in rural areas [the country] probably see things from a different prospective than "city" folk. They are usually more in tune with their surroundings, prefer to be somewhat self reliant, and can fend for theirselves better than someone who has lived a sheltered life. I was born and raised in the city but since moving to the country years ago I prefer the country life more and would never consider moving back to town. To each his, her own I say.
I commend you for adhering to the catch and release philosophy, although some would argue that catch and release is "cruel." I don't fish much anymore but when I do I usually eat what I catch.
"Self reliant" "fend for themselves"? this isn't the 18th century. There isn't a need for that anymore. We no longer worry about basic survival needs on a day to day basis.
As for catch and release being cruel, that's just silly. The fish lives and goes back to the water to do fish things. What's cruel about that? Some would say the hooks. In fact, most fish have cartilidge for mouths (similar to our ears) so it isn't as painful as say foul hooking the fish.

A lot of people would argue with you about that statement. "There isn't a need for that anymore" "We no longer worry about basic survival needs." ie fending for ourselves, being self reliant. Say that to anyone who has been robbed, mugged, carjacked, raped, etc. Or even someone who has been lost in the woods.
That is probably why this country is in the state that it is. Some people are to lazy, timid, or just plain stupid to take care of theirselves or their families. They depend on others, can you say governmental agencies, to take care of all their needs. I personally think it's a good thing to be self reliant and be able to fend for oneself. It may never happen, and I certainly hope it doesn't but who knows what's down the road? It's happened before. I'm for sure not going to sit around and wait for someone to feed me, take me out of harms way, etc. I think basic survival needs should be taught to everyone, the younger the better. I can guarantee you one thing, when someone comes crashing through my door in the middle of the night i'm not going to wait around for the cops to get here. That's one of the times when I will "fend for myself" and be "self reliant."

i don't think he meant it literally, at least i didn't take it that way. I think he meant that country folk are less likely to take hand outs, or blame someone else for their failures like all those city folk does.

Yeah it's silly alright I agree, just as silly as you thinking that fattening up and eating a legally caught pig is a cruel act.
As I said earlier some would argue that catch and release is cruel, here are just a few "silly" people, and this is what some people think............Opponents to the catch and release idea say that its morally wrong to put the fish through pain, stress and possibly death simply for fun or sport. If the fisherman doesn't eat the fish, their thinking is, then they are simply torturing the animal for their own ego and enjoyment. People opposed to catch and release also point out several British studies that show fish do feel pain in their mouths and lips, and take a great deal of effort to show the stress it is for fish to be hauled out of the water, handled, then put back in, often with wounds from the hooks used in fishing. To opponents of this program competition and recreational fishing are simply a cruel hobby with no regard or respect for the life of the fish.
sorry to hijack a hijacked thread, but a friend of my brothers hunts hogs with dogs and knives only!
He brought over a 300+ pounder he had just killed saturday!
We are going hunting with him on friday night, but I will take my 357 with me. I'd rather not get that close and personal with those tusks!

Wow don't check on a thread for a day and it goes to crap. For the record I trap them so that I can kill and slaughter them when I am ready. For this one I will probably wait until the temp drops. I also shoot them when the opportunity presents itself. Wild pig is much better for you and more tasty imo than pork from the store. I feed the hog scraps from food that is being thrown away, and I also feed it corn and pig feed. It cost me less than 200 bucks to build the trap and it has caught 5 hogs this year. Not a bad return on an investment. The only meat that my family buys from the store is hamburger meat every now and then. We eat hog, deer meat, fish, and shrimp that I caught or killed. As far as this being cruel, I don't really care if you or anyone else thinks it is cruel. The animal will be feed and have water until the day I put a bullet in its head. Actually my kids 8 & 12 will be flipping a quater to see which one gets to pull the trigger.
