Any bowhunters out there? Any Stories? Whatcha shootin'?

I am an avid fan of Matthews. I own 1 Switchback which is what I primarily use, and 1 Matthews 3-D Hunter, which is out of production, but still a favorite of mine and turned me on to Matthews to begin with. I shot a Martin Cougar Speed Flite, before that. Makes me throw rocks at Martin lol.

Only have taken one deer bow hunting....my first deer ever. A Doe...but man what a rush.

Re: Any bowhunters out there? Any Stories? Whatcha shootin'?

Bowhunting is the best kind IMO. I shoot a PSE (even though I didn't get off a shot this year). My first was when I was 13. I was hunting on Ft. Stewart, GA and shot a spike at about 20 yards. Spikes were so small I thought it was a doe when I let loose. And yes, it was an AWESOME rush.

Re: Any bowhunters out there? Any Stories? Whatcha shootin'?

I've been bowhunting since before compound bows were legal. In fact the very first deer I ever killed was with a Bear Kodiac Magnum recurve. I've been hooked ever since.

I took two deer with a bow last year, both does, but any deer taken with a bow is a trophy in my book.

I am still shooting my old Matthews MQ1, with Gold Tip arrows and Spitfire broad heads. But I am trying to relearn how to shoot a recurve again. I picked up an old Bear Kodiac Magnum last year and am trying to shoot it, but it is tough.

I agree with you 100%. Any deer that can be taken with a bow is a trophy. There is just something different about a bow...a different feeling all together. Spitfire's are ok. The ones I shoot are called Magnus. You oughtta check them out. They are baaad. I shot Thunderhead before I used those.

Just picked up a Pearson Z-34 to replace my Hoyt Ultrasport. I like Slick Trick broadheads - massive bleeding, tough as anything, and with its 4 blade design, it flies like field points.

Re: Any bowhunters out there? Any Stories? Whatcha shootin'?

I shoot a Matthews BlackMax II and it is fast!!! At 28" draw with 61lbs, I'm shooting at 298 fps. But then again I shoot CX200 with 100 grain Muzzy. I had a 160+ class 10 point come within 8 yards last season but he caught my wind when mother nature decided to change wind direction. I hunted him 3 years and he got taken on the day I decided to not sit in my usual morning stand. Can you believe 3 years of hard hunting one monster buck and it goes down to another hunter? But atleast I know that it wasn't pooched.

Re: Any bowhunters out there? Any Stories? Whatcha shootin'?

Well you guys have some fine archery gear. Last time I was out I took my trusty old Browning that I bought from Kmart years ago. I was walking up a trail in the bottom of a gully and there was the nicest 4 point I ever saw, about 10 yards up the hill from me. Just standing there broadside to me, looking and sniffing, trying to figure out what he heard. Looked like a nice Christmas card like you can buy at Cabelas. I froze and he didn't pick me up because I was downwind. He puts his head down, goes back to browsing so I take aim. BAM put one in the rocks right between his front and back legs! I should have aimed a little higher with him being uphill. So he looks up again, scents the air, I couldn't believe it, he just stood there, took one step forward, then back to his lunch! Now I'm shaking like a bowl of jello, trying to get another arrow ready. The adrenalin turned my fingers into big fat sausages and I pulled about 4 arrows out of the quiver. They went all over the ground and made a hell of a clatter. That buck looked me right in the eye then and I swear he gave me the finger as he ran off. Not like shooting bullseyes on haybales in your back yard. Big fun though. Deer get way overhunted here so you don't see that many nice ones. Mooses on the other hand, all over the place. When I go out on my Mtn. bike I take my big dogs with me to keep them in their place.

Re: Any bowhunters out there? Any Stories? Whatcha shootin'?

I got my first bow this last hunting season a bowtech diamond. I only got one shot at a deer with it this year a doe at 40 yards and in the excitement I used the 20 yard pin and shot right under it.

My Martin collected dust after I laid my hands on a Matthews lol. I used mine for 3-D shoots, as well as for hunting, which is exactly what the Matthews 3-D Hunter was for. Just the grip on the Matthews was so much better and felt better in my left hand. Other than just being quiet and fast, I love it so much more.

Re: Any bowhunters out there? Any Stories? Whatcha shootin'?

ive owned every bow available, from bowtech to martin, they are all as good as each other anymore, i also almost shot semi pro for bowtech, and have lined up with some of the best in the country, i think that most people think that mathews is the best, due to their huge name and success but the truth they are all good in 2007.... as a matter of fact i cant say im super impressed with this new drenalin.... i believe the most impressive new bow on the market would have to be the rytera from martin..... check it out
