Any Muzzleloader Hunters?

I'm wanting to get into traditional muzzleloading, so I've been looking at some build-your-own starter kits. I don't want to spend a lot of money on my first rifle, but I don't want to buy something that won't shoot well, either.

I'm thinking about buying the Traditions Kentucky Percussion rifle kit. I don't really like the Hawkens personally, and I don't want in-line. I also don't want a flintlock to start with (though I'll eventually get one).

My overall intention is to hunt whitetail with .50 caliber round balls, so I want a 1-66" spin, which this one has, I think.

Has anyone bought one of these? Are they decent to start with?

Thanks.

Re: Any Muzzleloader Hunters?

I have used a kit for a 45 and a 50 cal. Both were as accuate at 100 yds. as I can shoot, shooting from a bench. With the 50, I was able to use a plastic sabot with 44 cal. 240 grain hollow point bullit, fast reload. Both were CVA kits, the 45 was a Kentuckey rifle, the 50 was a short barreled Hawkins.

Re: Any Muzzleloader Hunters?

I never have gotten into the whole "traditional" thing. Sorry. I guess I haven't gotten to the point where hunting with modern stuff isn't enough of a challenge yet. I'm lucky if I take 3 deer in a season. I have a friend who bow hunts with a custom recurve and cedar arrows. The b*s*a*d kills deer though. Anyway - good luck.
