I took my daughter this weekend for the opener of our gun season. This is the first time she has had the chance to hunt in over seven years, but she didn't waste any time putting these two does on the ground. She took them both around 8:00 AM opening morning. The 260 Rem. did a great job as both of them were over 150 yds. away.
Poor ole dad got skunked, but that's ok as we both could of limited out on does during our two day hunt. Altogether we saw over thirty deer, but unfortunatly only one was a buck and he was just a spike. I'm still holding out for a "racked" buck untill the bitter end.

Never argue with idiots. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Yeah, that's why I only take one at a time, lol. If I took both of them at the same time I would be running from one stand to the other field dressing and dragging out deer.
I think next year it will be buck only at least for the first day, I think we would both have a better chance of killing a buck that way. But since this was her first hunt in several years I didn't fuss too much.

You are starting to sound like a UT elk hunter

TnBowhunter rut? what rut!!!! I hunt just south of Atlanta and the deer are confused, well they are confusing me. Mid October the scrapeing stopped, usually means Bucks are in full rut and tending does heavily. We were seeing Doe that were tended and seeing lots of chasing to, but this was a full 3 weeks+ earlier than it should be. Then the scrapes started back up, no one is seeing any chasing, no doe getting tended too and the bucks are going crazy since they aren't getting lucky. The deer aren't eating acorns or the food plots and they have no fat on them. The bucks are swelled up and their hocks are good and ripe. The thinking among the experts (camp members) is that the rut is hosed because of the drought in GA right now. The mature doe's don't wanna go in to heat, maybe mother nature is regulating itself.
I seen the same thing in Florida in 1997-1998 when we had a nasty drought. Then it was another 2 years before a real good rut was seen.

I hear ya Shane. I've found a total of one scrape and very, very few horned bushes. The does are still running around with their fawns which indicates to me that they are not even close to coming into estrus. It's been a strange year indeed, and I agree that the drought and our late freeze have a lot to do with it. Here at home acorns are non-existant, my food plots died out and I replanted three times before I got a half decent stand of clover and wheat. At the lease at least there are a few acorns dropping but most of the deer we have been seeing are in the fields, but I am afraid that with the hunting pressure from the "neighbors" even the does will go into seclusion.
The weatherman is calling for rain all weekend, i'm trying not to complain as we realy do need the rain.
Time will tell I suppose, luckily we have enough meat in the freezer to tide us over till next year. But it sure would be nice to at least see a racked buck for a change.
We had a pretty poor weekend in Mid-TN. There was so little (read none)movement we all came back to camp around 9:30 am for breakfast. One of us, not me, finally got a double Sunday morning when 3 does came within 50 yards.
There is NO mast on the ground at all. I opened up one of the stomachs to get an idea what they were feeding on and it was 95% grass and 5% corn.
Oh well, there's always this weekend
All y'all keep safe out there.
