Re: Ice Fishing!

My favorite fish to catch ice fishing is perch. When they are on it is just too much fun. A large perch is about 1 -1.5 lbs so a 10" hole is more than enough

It's a 10 inch hole and to be honest, I've never lost anything because it wouldn't fit through the hole. However, I've lost a few because the line rubs the bottom edge of the hole and causes the line to break.

The hole looks smaller because it was a first trip of the year and there was only 5-6 inches of ice.

I just finished a waterfowl hunting trip in ND and it was -9 F this morning. It won't be long for ice fishing in the Midwest!

Like i said - I'd like to have the problems of a guy that's missing fish out of a 10" hole.

Our lakes just started to freeze over. Mean temp has been around 19f!

Re: Ice Fishing!

There are a few lakes you can get to in Oregon for some ice fishing but they are pretty remote and no one brings an ice house. I did some ice fishing on Jackson lake in Jackson Hole WY a few years back. It was so cold driving out there that even with the heat on full blast the windows had ice crystals on the inside from our breath. When we got to the lake we took an ice plane out, which is basically a small air plane with no wings and skis for wheels, to a few different spots and caught a few Macs but nothing big. You'd have to catch a pretty big fish for it to have larger than a 10" gurth. I'm sure it happens, I've broke a few rods when fishing on the ice though. I'd love to see some pictures of those fish next to the hole.

I lived in jackson last winter and hit up jackson lake once and got a ticket for fishing without a license. I also went below the dam one drunk morning with the friend that were up all night playing poker. We took the titan when we started it up the temp read -38 it was a short trip more like site seeing. lol

Wow. That's picturesque scenery and beautiful company to share it with. No wonder you like ice fishing.
