AR-15- Bushmaster or Colt?

Hey Guys,

I am looking to get an Military issue M-16. I've learned that due to the fact that they're a full auto weapon, it's against the law.

SO.. I'm looking into getting an AR-15 instead.

Since I'm a little novice on this stuff...Any recommendations on manufacturer or similar weapon???

A $200 class 3 permit is all you need here in TN, but it comes with strings attached that not everybody wants....plus, full auto gets expensive quickly.

Check out www.ar15.com to learn more about the AR. I currently have an S&W M&P 15, and grew up on Colt SP1's. I love my M&P, but it is actually made by Stag arms....IMO Stag is probably the best bang for your buck. They also make a left handed model. Bushmaster, Rock River, GSE...there's a lot of good names. Also look at www.gunsamerica.com before you buy so you know the market. You should be able to pick up a very nice AR for around $700 - $800. An M&P around $1,000 - $1,400 and an SP1 anywhere from $1,600 - $2,000+ Colt wrote the book and is hands down the most appreciable if investment is a consideration.

FWIW, my little brother's a Marine on his second tour in Iraq. They're using Fabrique National (FN) M16 M4's.... Made in US, and a very nice weapon, but I think it's an odd place to outsource....especially with Colt's current struggles. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colt's_Manufacturing_Company

I have BM carbon-15. It's made of cartbon fiber (the upper and lower is, not everything)

Its ultra light, super strong and very durable. I had it srtrapped to the front rack of my 4x4 quad. The quad rolled down a hill. ALOT. the rifle was fine whereas the rack itslef was really bent out of shape. Strong rifle.

I have a magpul stock on it, and it is so comfortable i can shoot all day on it.

My dad's got a colt that has yet to break or malfunction in any way.

After considerable research, I recently chose a Rock River Arms AR 15 (Predator Pursuit model). I ordered it in early December and it arrived at my FFL on Thursday. I love it.

Mil issue M-16s are expensive!!! Thats a ton of cash to throw down. I have a BM, its a great gun. They are considered the best bang for the buck. Colts will always hold their value, but they aren't cheap.

I've been actually thinking of piecing one together as a project, but the 500 S&W snub is probably the next one on my list.

I have an Armalight(Eugene Stoner was working for Armalite when he developed the AR10, M16 and etc.) AR15 A-4. Just remember most of the manufacturers mentioned so far are good and all the guns are made to military specs. The Colts usually cost more due to name recognition. No matter what you buy.....I doubt that you will ever wear it out. keep it clean and oiled up and it will work everytime.

I've been looking at the Ruger Mini 30 and Mini 14, pretty sweet lookin guns.

Any of the Top names are good.....DPMS, S&W, Colt, Bushmaster. All should have either a hardened or match grade barrel. I personally own a couple of Bushmasters and love them. I guess just find you one for good price, because the features are almost mirrored on the MFR models.

I read Jasonmotox you were thinking about a Mini-30 or Mini-14. I have a Mini-30 all decked out and it's nice, but the Mini-14 is a better plinking/varmint gun. More options available if you like high cap mags & stuff.

TV isn't "law"...

if you have $10K-$15K, you can get a nice registered Colt M16. You can get a nice Colt LE6920 and be pretty close to mil-spec, besides a couple minor things...
