I think you mean AR15, as M16 is full auto...

my dad's got a sweet colt with lots of goodies on it. paid 800 barely used from friend with mounted laser. check out your local gun show and get a slightly used one. its much cheaper and just as good as buying a new 1.

Re: AR-15- Bushmaster or Colt?

Actually they are all AR-15's. The Army always like to designate stuff M-something. The Abrams tank is called a M1. The Humvee is called a M998.

Same goes for the AR-15. Army calls them M16's. I guess technically if you have a full auto AR-15 then it can be called an M16 or M4.

M16's were the orginal AR-15's with 20" barrel.

M16A1's were improved versions with forward assist and other stuff. Both the M16 and M16A1 were select fire in either fully auto or semi.

M16A2's replaced the M16A1's, had a rear site that was adjustable for elevation, a different twist rate to handle M855 and M856 ammo, and some other stuff. M16A2 were select fire weapons with 3-round burst or semi option. But the M16A2 I was issued when I was in the Army did not have an adjustable elevation rear site. Only when we were issued the newer A3's is when I remember the site being adjustable for elevation.

M16A3's are basically M16A2's but with full capabilities instead of 3 round burst.

M16A4's have a flat top upper with removable carry handle and railed handguards.

M4's (3 round burst) and M4A1's (full auto) are basically M16A2's with a shorter 14.5" barrel, collapsible buttstock, and flat top upper reciever.

Most of us have what you would call M4-forgeries. Exactly as an M4 but in semi only and with 16" barrels (to conform with Federal Law). 14.5" or shorter barrels are legal if you did the paperwork and paid the $200 tax stamp. Also if you have a permantly attached (pinned and welded) FH that brings the overall length to 16" or more, then you don't have to pay the tax stamp.

Will do...The next step for me is to find one of my local dealers so I can get a goo look at some these. Then I'll pick the model and manufacturer and go online to find the best price.

The variations in price right now have my head spinning...I'm not going to buy junk, but at the same time I don't need the most expensive just to say it's the most expensive. I just want a really cool military weapon that I can go out with and have a blast shooting.

All of your input is really an education, but at the same time, All this food for thought makes the decision a little more difficult because the choices all seem to be pretty close for my particular needs.
I am loving this thread and really want to pick up one of these weapons before I may not be allowed to.

Keep it going....the galleries are unbelievable...nice weapons... And nobody pizz off ERICCARTMAN.

Re: AR-15- Bushmaster or Colt?

you can get a basic rifle, say a 16" M4 style (AKA m4gery) AR15... then you can always trick it out later...

Re: AR-15- Bushmaster or Colt?

build it yourself! I did on one of mine and it was fun and easy. have the lower shipped to a local FFL, purchase a complete upper online somewhere and get a trigger kit. then pick out some nice optics, either red dot, single magnigication or multi-mag then a nice buttstock. you coulod easily put it together in a couple hours.

it will really help you understand how the firearm works which will help you down the road.

Yeah, that's been mentioned a couple times already....

What lower did you buy? did you have issues bringing it into CA?

Re: AR-15- Bushmaster or Colt?

Build it myself?....Only if you fire it first....

Seriously, I'm pretty good with breaking down my hunting stuff (rifle, shotgun, bow) but to build something like this from ground up I still think I'm a little novice.
My luck I'd fire it and the barrel would look like a banana peel. Like in the cartoons. I don't know if i'd trust my skills yet at that level.

no, no problems. i just bought the lower onlne form a gentleman who specializes in these kind of guns for the CA market. there is an awesome website for it. all dedicated to ar15 and ak47 that are CA legal. i have to have some limitiations tho.

I cant have a detatchable mag with a pistol grip. so i have what is called a bullet button. basically a device that fits into the mag release button hole. you cannot eject the mag by simpl;y pushing a button. it has a hole in it that you can put something into hit the button. the tip of a 223 rd is perfect. thus a"bullet button" CA law says a detach mag is ok with a pistol grip as long as a tool is required to remove the mag. then it says a bullet is considered a tool as is a screwdriver and other stuff. loopholes for the win!

stupid, but i have to mkae do with what i have.

the lower is a.....man i cant remember. i would have to go open the safe and look.

the other rifle i have is a carbon 15. it had a sealed mag well. i used a dremel, opened it up, sanded it and threw a bullet button it also.

oh, and you can get a .22LR conversion kit if you get a .223/5.56 (get a 5.56mm chamber), like the Ciener for example-- drops right in (replaces bolt, carrier, and has chamber adapter) and uses .22LR mags which are $20-$35 depending on where you go... or much more for metal ones made by Ciener....

I have a Colt lower with a bushmaster upper. It's great, even in full auto!
