Any other hobbies?

Do any of you have any other hobbies beside hunting and fishing?

My other interests include, woodworking, gardening, and taxidermy.

The taxidermy has almost turned into a job, but I only do enough to pay for my deer lease and put a little extra spending money in my pocket.

Here is a pic of my last deer head of the season. Not my best work, but considering the condition of the cape I think it turned out ok.

This deer was shot through the neck with a 12 gauge slug. It also had several deep scars on it's neck from fighting. And, as usual the cape was cut just a bit short. But hey, I love a challenge.

Re: Any other hobbies?

I ski, love to ride quads, play football, and auto detailing. Getting good at that last one. Ski season's over, really wet for quads, and spring football is over. Arg

I used to have a hobby.
It turned into some kind of disease.

Unfortunately I didn’t kill this deer. Heck I haven’t seen one that big in the wild in years. This deer was killed on a WMA [wildlife management area] about 100 miles from my house. I was told that it was the largest deer killed in that unit last year.

Thanks for the props, I try to improve a little on every one I do.

Re: Any other hobbies?

I killed a 36 point non typicial in 1980. I had him mounted but now the head is showing his age. My son says I need to have him redone. He says the new head frames are better and show more body muscle. What do you think. I don't want them to mess it up. I will try to post a picture. Hobbies? Grandkids, hunting, working my 80 acres, fishing and traveling.

Re: Any other hobbies?

Really just shooting, hunting, RC helicopters, checking my game cams, and working on food plots. Also spending time with the family. BTW that is a great looking mount. I actually like the scars from them fighting. I told my taxidermist to leave the scars, I think it adds character.

Yeah, everything digital video and photo...

I've become hooked like a fish..Hunting has started taking a second seat (until opening day of course).
Between the truck, video gear and hunting gear, i'm going broke very fast...

You should get him "remounted". Your son is right, taxidermy has come a long way in the past several years. Not only in the forms but in the eyes, chemicals, etc. I have remounted a few deer myself. It's not much harder to remount an old trophy as it is to mount a new one. It just takes a little more time taking the antlers off of the old mount, etc. In fact you can supply your own cape from a freshly killed deer that you don't intend to have mounted.[as long as it is close to the same size that is]. Or just about any Taxidermist will be able to supply you with a fresh cape. If done correctly the remount will look like the antlers belonged on that particular deer.

I would love to see some pics of your buck, sounds like one heck of a deer. Congrats to ya!!!!

LOL, yeah I hear you. At least one of my "hobbies" pays a few bills. The hunting, shooting sports can get expensive in a hurry.

BTW, I have been in your neck of the woods before, I have an Uncle that lives in Paris Ontario. Some of my fondest memories are of the Summers I spent up there when I was a child. You have some beautiful country up that way.

Re: Any other hobbies?

I have been busy lately... Of course hunting, fishing, canoeing, paint-ball and off roading with my 3 daughters is near the top of my list. But I also have developed a new rifle round (mainly for the AR-15/ M-16) That I am giving to the military. It has taken on a life of it's own! I have had a chance to travel because of it, including invited to the White House... Other than That, Class III guns, and shooting sub-machine gun matches.

This is the 36 point I killed in 1980 in Crockett, Tx on my 80 acres. I have been looking for relatives since then but 10-12 points is the best I have seen. I think I might try and have the head reworked. After 28 years, getting a little frizzy.

Re: Any other hobbies?

Let me see, beside shooting and fishing I also enjoy boating, jet skiing, working on cars and puting together plastic models.
