all I'm saying is you will have WAY more fun on a quad with a clutch and gears

Trust me a clutch and gears gets old fast when trying to crawl up rocks or mud ride. Which is what is involved in the GNCC races......

they may get old but really any idiot can ride an automatic.. at least having gears takes a small amount of skill and IMO riding an automatic is like a car that you lean into the turns with you just twist the throttle.. no offense you obviously are big into them I saw some pics of your quad.

I'm not trying to offend anyone I just feel strongly about not buying automatic quads

Trust me I was the same way and I understand where your coming from because of what your ride and how you ride. But when using a 4wd for what is made for the first time ride a weekend on a manual. Then the next weekend right it on a automatic and you will never go back. When you get the mud and the rpms go crazy and you need the extra torque to spin big arse tires your by the time you downshift your stuck. I dont care how good you are with shifting. Same thing with rock crawling sometimes you need low end crawling torque and the next moment you need a high gear to haul butt by the time you switch gears you quad is laying with the wheels in the air.

Re: Help me buy an ATV....

Not to dissuade you from your decision, but since it sounds like this is your first ATV and I don't recall anyone else mentioning it I feel I must bring up SAFETY. Yes, SAFETY. I say that as I sit here recovering from a broken leg that happened while riding my ATV almost 3 weeks ago.

I know you want to involve your kids and are planning on riding 2-up, but please take my advice and do NOT ride 2-up on an ATV not meant for it, especially if you or your kids have never ridden 2-up on anything before. Riding ATVs requires shifting your weight constantly as well as maintaining balance. Yeah, seems odd considering it has 4 wheels, but trust me on this. Riding 2-up is going to reduce your ability to maintain proper balance because your movement will be limited, your rider is also going to affect balance and could end up causing you to wreck. Not only that, in many places riding 2-up is illegal and you will be cited for doing it.

I've grown up riding 3- and 4-wheelers and I've done and seen my share of accidents. When I was in the first hospital after breaking my leg (roughly 45 mins from where people ride), the ER was full of people injured while riding ATVs. Breaking my leg was actually quite minor compared to a lot of injuries.

If I had to sum up what precautions you MUST take in order to be as safe as possible, they would be:

Don't ride 2-up with your kids. There are too many scenarios that end up where your kid is hurt or even killed.
Wear all the proper safety gear every time you ride, no exception. Helmet, neck brace, knee braces, full-length boots would be the minimum. The last thing you want is to dump the quad and break your neck, have it roll over on you and break your knee or leg, etc.

I broke my leg because I didn't take this advice, I wasn't wearing the proper boots and in a freak, low-speed accident where my ATV didn't even roll over I'm now laid up for a month or two, have a titanium rod in my leg permanently, and will likely never walk the same.

ATVs are great fun but they're also very dangerous. I started riding when I was 8 (I'm a bit older now. ) and thought being a good rider would "protect" me. Well, that's just plain stupid thinking.

Also, don't forget to take an ATV safety course. Just like you should take an MSF course before you go out and start riding a motorcycle, you should also take an ATV course. Check out ATV Safety Institute

Will I ride my ATV again once I'm healed? That's yet to be seen, my wife is completely against the idea now even though I told her the primary reason I broke my leg was due to lack of proper gear, so who knows. We'll cross that bridge when we get to it.

Good luck in your search and please make safety your #1 priority. No amount of fun is worth injuring yourself or your kids when it could be prevented by riding as safe as possible.

i see where your comin from man, i went from a 2 stroke dirt bike to a 300 kawi automatic, and now ive got a raptor, granted if all your doin is haulin a$$ and rompin around a clutch and gears are a blast and you have more control of the power, but this guy is wanting somethin that his kids are going to ride with him and he will be runnin a plow and what not, and as far as i know you cant even get a ute 4 wheeler with a clutch, as close as you can get is a manual shift with an auto clutch, and personally i like the cvt's over them, much easier to use... and lets face it slow woods ridin sucks with a manual shift...

Re: Help me buy an ATV....

Wow that really sucks I hope you get better soon. I have kinda dropped the 2-up thing because of what you mentioned and various youtube videos doing exactly what you said plus its unlikely that a 2-up would fit in the short bed of my titan even though I might be getting a trailer awhile later to tow it around. I wanted it for myself and son to go deep into the woods for fishing and hunting. And for myself for fun, snow plowing, and working around the house. No speed and hill climbing but I getting what you are trying to get across. Dirt bike will not work because of what we have to carry. We could hike it on foot but that takes forever and my wife flips when we disappear for days. Side-by-sides are not allowed because of the width. Thanks for sharing....

More than likely you'll be fine, I'd guess that most of the injuries are a combination of inexperience/dumb and not wearing the proper gear, some are just plain freak things. In all reality, if I were with a different group of people and wasn't trying to keep up with them on their dirtbikes I really don't think this would have happened. My spill was while going pretty slow, as I said, but up until that point I was going faster than I normally would have been, which of course made it harder to slow in time.

Anyway, ATVing is great fun and the utiliy ATVs with 4wd will go virtually anywhere, plus they're pretty stable due to their weight.

My wife is pretty...silly. She says I should sell my ATV and if I want to be suicidal again then I should buy another one after I'm all healed up (~6 months). That just seems silly to me, the ATV I have is in great condition and is paid for, it doesn't cost any money to have it sit in the garage so I don't want to sell it. We'll see how I feel in 6 months.

My 2 up fit in my short bed fine with the tailgate down!! I had a 1up before and had a passenger seat mounted on the back, just have to be carefull when going up on steeper hills. With the 2 up now the ride is a bit stiffer but it is way more stable in crooked trails!!!

Re: Help me buy an ATV....

i have owned an 02 polaris sportsman 400 since new. we beat the hell out of it for the first 2k miles and it held up great. only had a problem with the cam but the guy at the dealer said it was a common problem because they made the cam out of a softer material and it doesn't hold up well. depending on how beat up it looks i would stick with polaris or honda. we use our sportsman for plowing or 1/2 mile drive way with the 5' cycle country plow and it works great my only complaint is the suspension in the front gets sucked down when you lift the plow... if you have a dirt drive i would recommend a set of chains for plowing i dont have any and i do ok, but a friend of mine uses them and trust me your way better off.

Re: Help me buy an ATV....

I have a 09 Can-Am Outlander Max (2up) 800 and it fits. My old one was an 04 Outlander 400. For legality of those seats well they are not. Its usually indented in the plastic " No Passengers". But as for the cops or c-o's, they are prettyok with the fact that most ppl ride 2 up on a single seat quad, technicaly they can charge yopu but i have never been. As for where to get them well i know Kimpex makes them.

here is a pick of my old quad with the box seat.
