hog down 6-22-09

Had one in the trap this morning. He was some PO when I got there. He hit the side of the trap over and over, got his snout stuck once. I got him with my marlin 60 .22lr. Shot him twice in the side of the head, and that just pissed him off. So he ran at me and gave me a good straight shot. That shut him down instantly.

The knife a friend of mine made for me.

Man I love this custom knife.

In the trap yeah, don't want to waste any meat. But when they are not caught in a trap I use my .30-06.

I've watched my uncles kill many hogs with a .22. Most times it only took one shot behind the ear and they would go down instantly. Of course they weren't hunting, just slaughtering them to be butchered. It was also their weapon of choice for some mighty big steers as well. My dad just always used the blunt end of a single bit ax.

Yeah one good shot with a .22 will do it every time. He was running around the trap when I shot the first couple times and there is lots of things in the trap to get in the way. The first good shot he gave me shut him down. I have a friend that hunts with a .17 (can't remember the name, but it is the one based on the .22 mag).

Actually I am trading it for some shrimp with a friend of mine. He shrimps, but can't get any hog, and I have hogs, but can't catch any shrimp. Works out great for both of us.

Re: hog down 6-22-09

Here is the trap, it is getting a little thick in there, but that is one reason they are comfortable in it. I tie the door open so they can eat in it all the time, I only set the trigger when I want to catch one.

You can see the feeder in this pic.

And this is the entrance. Very easy trap to make, and they work great.

Man that is a long ride. If you want a hog, you can come try, but I have some soldiers that I am letting hunt over the next few months, so they get priority. Then from September to January I only hunt deer.

We have lots of hogs, but with the drought right now they are not moving much. I am only getting pics of one hog right now. Sure hope the soldier coming hunt my place this weekend gets one. We have a chance of rain, and if that happens the hogs will be moving, I got my fingers crossed.
