I wouldnt call it drone, you can definitely hear it but it isn't annoying. If you listen to the radio or have the windows down you will forget about it. I do think it depends on what your towing, I just did a 500 mile round trip with somewhere around 4000lbs with a 23ft trailer and with rpms at 2100 to 2600 it didnt bother me. You've probably read about how its not super loud under normal conditons, but when you put the gas to the floor it screams.
