Re: Heavy Duty Titan On The Way!

(Unconfirmed) Rumors are flying that the design efforts for a Tundra HD is ramping up again. I've heard it from during conversations with a couple of suppliers to Hino. No good news on the Nissan side though.

Not trying to rain on the parade folks, but what's the date on that Edmund's quote?

I stand corrected, as the article is dated 3/14/07. The only thing that doesn't make sense is the part about Toyota comensing the Tundra manufacturing.........Hasn't it been going for awhile?

Re: Heavy Duty Titan On The Way!

The HD is off the table right know, but a V6 Diesel for the Half Ton Titan is still a possibilty. I say offer the Diesel and then up the Titans payload with a bigger rearend and we would have a heavy half ton.

You stand further corrected: 3/14/06. Now does it make sense?

It has already been reported that the LCV (Light Commercial Vehicle) is being developed with a V6 diesel engine. But the volumes will be low and you'll likely never see it at a dealer but as fleet purchases.

Re: Heavy Duty Titan On The Way!

I would buy that little diesel for sure. North America knows diesel for big power and towing but doesn't understand the benefits of small diesels for economy - a little V6 diesel could do everything the big V8 can - with half the fuel, and they sound so sweet. Look what Cummins can do with an inline 6 - although it it a bit bigger. Scaled down to about 4L it would be a good powerplant for a 1/2 ton.

Re: Heavy Duty Titan On The Way!

I was disappointed with Nissan stopping the process of coming out with a heavy duty truck, but I fully understand, from reading Nissan's comments, why they chose to do so. However, I would love for Nissan to come out with a diesel that could do what the 5.6 can do. Also, they could garner even more sales by doing a Heavy Duty half ton, like GM/Chevy did a few years back. I suppose to make the present Titan into a heavy duty you would at least have to"

1. Maintain the low gearing at least to what the Big Tow has.

2. Put a heavy duty rear end in the thing.

3. Beef up the suspension.

4. Increase the length of the wheelbase. This is already on the books for the 2008 Titan.

5. Give it a larger gas tank. Also coming with the longer wheelbase in 2008. When you are towing and getting 9 or 10mpg, that larger tank comes in real handy.

6. Also may need to increase the brakes.

None of the above changes are so revolutionary that Nissan couldn't do it without a big risk to them. Nissan has to be careful with their decisions because they don't have the deep pockets, like Toyota, to cover a mistake.

All excellent ideas IMO.

P.S. I might want to throw in a long bed option too?

GM has signifigant interest and control with Isuzu. DMAX is the company that builds the Duramax motors, and it was a joint venture between GM and Isuzu (although Isuzu does most of the day-to-day, iirc)

Re: Heavy Duty Titan On The Way!

Just saw new photos of the 08 Titan Long bed. The truck is sweet, but it does kinds look like the crew cab door is a bit small. I don't know if it was the angle. It does look like it's HD model too. I cross my fingers that the final numbers will have more power and really give others a scare that Nissan can step it up.
