As TOK has mentioned before, Jersey is a tough state..i bought rubber tipped bullets(very expensive), in case if i had to take care of an intruder. And honestly, i don't feel like cleaning after i shoot the as*****...plus i dont think i have to worry about that much..i live in a very safe neighborhood.

Those are both gorgeous! Yo, do you reload?
I was always shooting 9mm and .40, which is really cheap, so I never bothered. Shooting .45 is pretty expensive, and I'm thinking about getting a reloading setup.

Although I also keep a pistol in the nightstand, I think you home defense guys should be considering shotguns. I'm in the 'burbs, and I think even a wussy 115 grain 9mm would wind up going through the flimsy walls and hitting my neighbors house if it didn't catch a stud. Terry's .357 is a small, very fast round. That could probably punch a stud and still have a lot of energy.

Unfortunately, the range I belong to doesn't really allow for impromptu ballistics tests.

TOK,
No I don't personally reload but there is a reloader near me and if i save the casings from the range, I pay almost 50% less than FMJ's, however I always use the Full Metal Jackets for home protection use.

YES, it happened to my family about 6 months ago.
I was home not feeling so well so I asked my wife to pick up our sons, aged 15 & 16 from a concert in Philadelphia. It was past midnight when they got home, and they announced the arrival. After some short talk my kids came back to my room said "goodnight'. 15 minutes later ( around 1:00am ) I heard a window glass break. First question in my mind was: Where are my boys? Split second later I hear my 2 boys call my name if I broke something..aha...my kids didn't do it. I look next to me and my wife's facial expression says: "don't ask me".
Now everything is in "SLOMO".... I get my Colt 45 with red laser, run out the side door and caught this 6'2" big black guy about 260 lbs reaching inside the window for the lock. From about 10 ft away, I focused the red beam right on his head and told him not to move or i'll detach his head from his body. He stopped and I instructed him to drop to the ground and put his hands behind his head...put his fingers together and not move a muscle or "I swear I'll blow your brains out"...

To make the long story short, the local Cops arrived after my wife called 911 and took control of the intruder. He is from Philadelphia which is 20 miles from my suburban NJ home, had tons of credit cards with female names, a few reefers and a screw driver. When the Cops questioned him why he was in my property (2 acres and my house is 500 ft from the road) his excuse was he just wanted a light for his smokes... GO FIGURE..

Now, I am neither violent nor a pacifist, but analyze this: If the intruder was "casing" my property prior to the arrival of my wife & kids and concluded that he could take care of a woman and 2 boys, he made a big mistake because he forgot the owner of the kingdom..... without my gun, the ending of this story may be completely different and I for one would not entertain any other scenario.

It's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.
Fortunately, I've never needed it. I did have a scare a few years ago where some lunatic accused me of stealing his bicycle despite the fact that I was walking down a sidewalk with NO bicycle. He didn't really look like the exercising type to me, either. He was really acting like he was about to escalate things, but changed his mind. Perhaps he felt I wasn't intimidated (and I actually was! This dude was not normal, like a PCP freak or something). I was ready to kick him hard in the nuts if he came toward me. Sounds like a sissy thing to do, but that probably would have ended the altercation quick without any law enforcement red tape.

You have to realize when you carry that it is your absolute LAST option to pull the firearm. Some people find that it actually heightens their awareness of their surroundings and actually decreases the chance they'll ever need it. You think "God, I'm carrying a gun, I have to stay out of trouble".
Most people that have fired a gun in self defense don't want to discuss it. It's a very traumatic experience to shoot someone, and you're also likely to lose everything you own defending yourself on civil charges.

Gr8titan's example is the absolute best kind of story about defending yourself with a gun, and it's the type that seldom makes the papers. The other type is the crackhead thinks he's found an easy target, gets a barrel waved in his face and runs, police are never called. If you don't, or can't carry a gun (or don't like guns), I think you should have OC spray. This will stop most people in their tracks and give you a chance to get away. I think anyone who depends on the police for protection isn't really thinking things through. They do a great job, but 98% of the time they don't get there until it's all over.

Tim

NissanTitanGirl:
I,ve been a gun enthusiast for decades and never used my guns other than target shooting until middle of last year. Owning a gun requires a lot of knowledge, responsibility, discipline & self control throughout the ownership of the weapon and specially when you are at a situation where you may have to use it. Whatever the circumstance, always remember that the "shooter" will be judged by a jury of his own peers at the end of the day.

Now, having said all that, I will do anything in this world to protect my family and make them feel safe, healthy and secure in my house and property. I cannot see myself sitting alone in my 'family room' without my wife and kids especially IF their absence was caused by any incident that could have been prevented by me. I will gladly give my life for them as I my life is full with their presence and hopefully that they may pass on to their offsprings the same love, freedom and security in their own homes.

NissanTitanGirl, I am glad that you had never been in such a predicament based on your inquisitive statements. I am happy that your home as a child was safe and secure. I am happy that your present life is void of any experience similar to ours. But the world is continuosly changing and sadly it is changing towards the total disregard for life, property and freedom (remember NYC 9-11?). When everything is said and done, I will never allow these changes to threaten my family in one way or another.

I will continue to think that you'll forever be an inquisitive kind of girl. Please continue to post as querries like yours bring out the positive reasons of gun ownership (and ..Titan ownership..LOL)
PEACE,
Ray
