Roadie or MTB?

For the cyclists here, who's a roadie and who's on mtbs?

I was a roadie when I lived in Ontario and Michigan, used to do about 250 miles / week in season there. I moved to Tucson, supposedly one of the best places to cycle, and stopped cycling for a few years as the motorists are out to kill you. No joke there. Got a set of his and her Avalanches a couple of years ago and am starting to get some miles on the various paths here.

Road young,MTB old

I am another Road to MTB convert, but I ride the MTB mainly on the road ,since the New Orleans area really doesn't have any offroad areas you would care to ride in-swamp or mud. From 68-81 I biked everywhere, rarely used my truck(this was in Baton Rouge, and New Orleans-not bike friendly places).I quit riding in about 83-bad neck, bad drivers, mortgage, kid etc.In 2000 I happened to notice that dual suspension bikes were cheap($250 Mongoose),and we got two for our trip to Flagstaff AZ.We had a lot of fun,and the dual suspension bike with 30-45 psi 2.1" tires rode very softly were easy on my back and neck-nothing like the 25mm 100 psi clinchers I last used.Promptly sold the Mongoose, and Ebayed Trek carbon Fiber Y-22 and Y50.They have very low tech rear suspension(lot of bob),but they are light, and easy to lug around.I ride maybe 10 miles/day almost all onroad.Charlie

I lived south of Detroit in one of the Downriver communities. I used to cycle alot around the Woodhaven area. There's three metro parks that all connect, you can get 20 miles easy that way. I was in the Downriver Cycling Club.

Which one is the Dalmac? I'd go up and do the Big Mac century, fall and spring, and stick around for the Sunday ride over the Bridge.

Best one in Michigan, that I still miss, was the Idaride. Last year I did it we stayed for a four day weekend in the dorms in Adrian college. I did 80+ miles every day for four days. It was great.

The Dalmac is from Lansing to the Mackinaw Bridge over labor day..I think. I did it a long time ago, even though I am only 20 years old. I used to live in Lansing, and now Live in FL. I will be in Detroit in 2 weeks however!

My wife rides roadies and I'm looking for a 54cm roadie. We both used to ride mtb's but here on flat land it doesn't do much for you

Chili,

I was a 'roadie' for about 5 years from 89-94. Did many of the rides out here in the San Diego area. Used to ride a 'Giant' frame but everything else on it was good titanium stuff. Built the bike up over almost 3 years. Gave it up when I went to WA state - traded out of it for Ski stuff....lol

I ride both, more Road than Mountain. I have a GT Road, I-drive, and a Zaskar. Does it matter, just ride....

I like when you ride a mountain bike on the road, none of the roadies will look at you. Switch bikes and clothing, instant respect.

Derwud, I like to ride both too. In a perfect world though, I prefer road. It's just not something I'm going to get into now that I've moved to Tucson however, so I'll stick to my unpaved road cycling, basically using the GT mtb to just ride nice easy trails.

What I liked most about road cycling was the social aspect. When I lived in Michigan, for instance, we'd meet 7 am Saturday mornings, get 40 or so miles in, have a nice two hour long breakfast at one of a couple dozen little rural eateries, then get another 30-50 miles in on the way home. Sundays were just 30 mile "breakfast rides".

I'm too fat now, I need to lose some weight to do mega-miles, but I loved those days.

My cycling club is just down to three. And one wants to kill me on a ride to San Diego.

I spent a lot of days MTBing the tight, twisty single-track of the Daniel Boone National Forest on fat tires when I lived in KY. I am in VA Beach now though...I have to drive an hour to find any single-track with more than a two-foot elevation change. LOL The flat stuff is fun too, but I need a bigger bike frame. My Rockhopper Comp is a comfortable size for single-track, but it's horribly small for road/beach riding.

Mtb

mtb-ing!

on the road, the kind of bike i'll want has got 1000cc and 170hp.
with people like me in my Titan driving around, I'd stay away from road riding on a bicycle (unless you're a a club or team ride, then maybe).

"if it aint dirty or dangerous, than it aint likey to be much fun!"

road biking is dangerous, without the fun...a road bike's got no armor, no handling, no power...compared to a car. 99.99999% of drivers are fine, but it just take that one bad driver to get you maimed or killed. and the DA will likey drop the charges or "slap wrist".

get dirty on the trail, that's what i like: twists & turns, single tracks, berms, jumps, drop-off, whoop-de-whoops! and if i get hurt one of my crashes on a trail, then oh well, at least the damage wasn't inflicted from a driver.

I was on a ride Sunday and I came up to a stop sign and looked to the right and saw a Smoke Crew cab coming down from Santa Anita Canyon with three mountain bikes in it. I just stared at the truck as I rode through the intersection. They probably thought I was nuts.
