Question Draft info, what do ya think.

Heres some info on the draft bill that is going to be voted on. Tell me what ya think. Its affecting us 18-26 year olds (which isnt the majority of this site), but im curious what ya guys think. Especally those that were acutally drafted the last time, if we have any.

While I am well past the age limits stated, I am still Fleet Reserve and may be called upon anytime in the next 9.5 years. Once again and as before, if I am needed I will be there. Till then, I still continue to serve just not in a uniform.

Titan21, I applaud your above statement.

This bill is bs and has no chance of passing. If you are really interested in it, check to see who the congressmen are who are sponsoring it and their reasons for doing so.

Is this an election year or what?

Read the whole article the bill says college cant stop you. If your not a senior its delayed until end of semester, if your a senior its until the acidemic year. But im not worried either.

I wish i had the stance you did on it, i do not see it as a positive and will do what i can not to serve. Not that i do not have love for my country or a lack of respect for people that do serve, in fact i have a great deal of respect for those that fight for me and do not take it for granted, they lay their life on the line for others and that is admirable. I just do not want to be put in a situation where i would be ordered to take another persons life, it is agaisnt my religon, in fact a commandment and that is a big part of my life and how i moraly lead my life.

Thanks you guys that responded, i like hearing others opinions and respect you for speaking up.

That's what conscientious objector status is for, but don't think that will get you out of the military, just out of line units. Do you honestly think everyone who serves in the military is a trigger puller? You could be a nurse or any other non armed/non combatant mos. But this is all idle talk, 37L1 already uncovered the true motivation of this bill. You are only feeding the flames.

No no no dont take my response as uneducated generality. I didnt want to make that impression at all. This was never intended to become a flame war im not sure where ya go that from. There is also a rumor behind this bill that it was created to scare the pro-war congressmen into voting against war by making them think that their sons and daughters might be called up for it. But im not sure about that rumor, rumors are just rumors. Sammy plz dont take what i said previously as a generality about how i feel, it seemed you were alitte jaded about what i said. I believe in the fact that to have my own solid ethical views on things i need to first see other opinions or opposite facts to see where i too stand. That is the only reason for asking in the first place. You semed like i was creating a draft dodging situation and that is the furthest from the truth. Not everyone is interested in military service, but those that are not interested arent always against it. In fact i did see a recruiter after highschool interested in being a pilot but was told i am too tall to fly a jet and they do accept people with asthma into their flight program. I mean Homer Simpson is my hero and he served for a bit.The intent was to know what some of my fellow titantalk members thought about it.

Plz dont jump to any conclusions. No offence was intended. Have a beer with us and chat. -Brian (tikigod)

Those War Dog Democrats!!!!

Isn't it interesting that S.89 is sponsored by Senator Fritz Hollings, DEMOCRAT from South Carolina and HR 163 is sponsored by Representative Charles Rangel, DEMOCRAT from New York.

My, my, my,. . . What could be their motivation???????

You really should read their statements about these bills.

Yeah i think this is pretty much bs too. I am also in that age group and at the moment, would never join. After watching our country invade iraq and have killed many innocent people and just sickens me. Just cuz i live in this country doesn't mean i agree with the way it is run and our government. I could get into a whole big thing about this but lets just say i made my point.

I dont normaly talk about political stuff, however, this subject has peeked my interest. A draft would be political suicide to whomever is in office. Having been in the Navy for seven years, I thank god for the day that I joined. It was the best thing that I could have done. Ive seen alot of people that it didnt work for also, and they were beter off out. Believe it or not, not everybody in the military are baby killers. I even asked to go to Iraq, but they told me no. Their sending me to Cuba instead. Anyway, were people too.

Although I believe every American should serve his/her country in someway, I do not look forward to working with those that don't want to be there. This very well and currently is a life and death situation. On SUBS I Feel better at night knowing that the guys are doing there jobs because thay want to not because thay have to.

I usually dont jump into politicial threads but this one is interesting.

I am currently in the army reserves and have already been activated once and went to Afghanistan for 8 months. I think a lot of young people now a days could use the discipline drilled into them during basic training. I also feel it would be a good thing for it to be mandatory to do at least some kind of military service. YET on the other hand I understand how a lot of people feel about the draft too....I volunteered for the reserves so I knew there was a chance of going somewhere but it still hit me like a ton of bricks when I got the phone call telling me to prepare my personal things becuase I was being activited to serve under operation Noble Eagle and later Enduring Freedom. I couldnt image being called one day and told I was just volunteered to go to basic training and then later to Iraq or some other third world armpit!!
In saying this I guess I am not really for the draft but wouldnt be against legislation urging / requiring high school grads to enlist. if only for two to four years and give them some kind of future benefit to look forward to. like a better chance at Social secruity for govt service or something along lines (becuase the odds of people in that current 18 - 26 yr old age bracket not having social security around seems to be getting better by the year.)

Anyway nuff babble from me.....

I hope you realize that you are a "fortunate one."

You're sickened by innocent people in Iraq being killed? Good, innocent death should offend every human being.

I'm sure you found the World Trade Center destruction extremely offensive.

Where were the protesters in the streets about that?

Guess in what country over 20,000 persons were murdered last year?

Wait, that would be the United States wouldn't it?

Where are the protesters in the streets about that?

We can be very selective regarding speaking out about what we find as "offensive."

All of us would like to live in a peaceful world enjoying the standard of living that we currently have.

In reality, the world is indeed a violent place, just look around. We are fortunate if we can choose the ground on which to fight or better yet, get someone else do it for us.
