BTW, Charles Darwin never said or used the phrase I quoted. There were
other philosophers around his time that espoused such ideas. Many of
them later became known as "Social Darwinists". I guess Herbert Spencer
would be the best known.

He wrote:

"For as those prematurely carried off must, in the average of cases, be those in whom the power of self-preservation is the least, it unavoidably follows, that those left behind to continue the race are those in whom the power of self-preservation is the greatest--are the select of their generation."

I think young people doing dangerous and stupid things will always be with us.
Many of us thought we were invincible at that age.

I remember seeing a quote of Forrest Gump recently by a sage old pundit,
"stupid is as stupid does". I think that saying will be true for a long time.

After reading the definition again it does sound like survival of the fittest which i dont think is right unless you do it safely. Hey guys, i am just a Truck Driver. I graduated, and my english is good, but tone the words down some. Bottom line is be safe!! Dont do what this video shows, and keep in on a track! It dont take a professor to figure that out.

Thanks professor for sucking the fun out of a joke. Yes Darwin didn't theorize the Darwinism theory himself, never said he did. But it has become a common usage term, ala the Darwin Awards.

I didn't realize from your post and Budman's response that you were making
a joke. Sorry for my lack of knowledge about the "Darwin Awards". I'll try to
stay more informed.

That's OK, Gilligan!

All I'm saying is kids never learn till it's too late, or they happen to luckily
survive these stunts and realize in later years just how lucky they were.

As far as the theory of "natural selection" goes, what has changed since
the creation of the National Hot Rod Association many years ago? The
idea then was to move this kind of activity off of the street and to a place
where some degree of safety could be created. Then, as now, very limited
success.

If anything, the situation may be getting back to like it was in the late 60's,
early 70's. We went through some years after that where you could buy a
new car with all the pollution controls, and if it had a V8 you were lucky if
it put out much more than 100 horses and got 20 mpg. Now we are seeing
small cars advertised with 350 hp. Very different from the 1974 Maverick
that my sister bought new; you could floor it and swear that you never
even felt it move.

Movies like "The Fast and The Furious", and now "Torque", will only serve
to encourage this type of behavior. In my day it was "Two Lane Blacktop".

Whatever, I've been drag racing on the streets ( DC Metro to you local guys) for 4 years now and have won lots of money and earned alot of cred, I lost some too. You can send a million more videos and reports of street racing danger and I'll say the same thing. People have been doing this for ever, your parents and there parents too. Just lately with this "fast and furious" crap, like someone already mentioned has brought it more into the public eye. Dont act like its a new thing and definitly dont act like you have never raced out of a redlight.... With any kind of car. You dont need a flashy street rod to be a "drag racer". So lets stop acting like those "damn kids" are all the problem. This "Behavior" has been going on for way longer than these movies. Human nature, to be the best... Survival of the fittest.

Has anyone-in the history of the world-ever really raced for pink slips??

This is a bit off topic, but I gotta ask since the 60's and 70's were brought up(and winning money on street racing bets).Does anyone think that anyone has actually raced for pink slips, and actually paid off?.Now I have known plenty of guys who would make the bet if given the chance, since they had nothing to lose-they would never have actually have paid off on the bet.
I always figured that "pink slip racing" was some sort of urban legend.Has anyone here actually seen it happen?Just curious,Charlie

Drag Racing Safety is an oxymoron, and the "human nature" arguement is bull s--t. There are lots of urges, like sex and physical aggression, that could be considered human nature, but that doesn't make them acceptable in society. Learn to restrain yourself or you will be forced to pay any number of penalties in the future. If someone hurt me or a member of my family in a drag racing collision, I'd make sure those penalties were as severe as possible.

Sorry to rant, but those kind of arguements really get me going.
To add a little perspective, I'm 23.

Guys like this make good hunting. . . . .

Seriously, if you're really that good, earn your "cred" at the track.
