The current USS Enterprise CVN 65 (the first nuclear powered carrier) is on its last deployment and is scheduled to be deactivated and later scrapped at the end of the year. The previous USS Enterprise CV 6 served with great distinction (to put it mildly) in WW II.
This is a petition to name a new carrier USS Enterprise:
Agreed...the whole naming process is so bastardized now.
If they are going to name after people, why not at a minimum name them after Navy Medal Of Honor recipients or similarly worthy? I know the Navy has to play the political game too, but come on...naming a warship because a crook brought in a bunch of pork?
Great thread topic, and I'll check out the petition.

I shudder to think at the prospect of a grandchild puking over the rail of the USS Obama or USS Clinton.
With the new green initiative I hear the Navy will need special ships that will be mobile sewage holding tanks so the fighting ships don't have to dump as sea. That wouldn't bother you would it? I can hear it now... Captain are holdings are full better call for the USS Obama to suck out our sh$t.

LOL...great replies! My kid just started BUD/s and I think he would quit if he ever had to set foot on something called the USS Obama.
The only thing I disagree with is that even a crap-sucker boat deserves better than a politicians name because it's still our nation's best living on it.
We have hundreds of thousands of people that deserve their name with that honor, and none of them are politicians. That being said, how could the Navy even consider retiring the Enterprise name? Maybe a little too much civilian interference in military matters?
Signed, may there always be a ship named Enterprise in the fleet. I think if you want any kind of ship named after you, you need to have served a significant portion of your life as a sailor or marine with the absolute highest distinction in while in harm's way and have made the ultimate sacrifice.
