First time I heard about it, I read that it was going to help out lower income families by guaranteeing overtime.
Later I read it basically just cuts out anybody who doesn't make close to minimum wage from getting overtime.
I found out the truth today. Parents of a friend of a mine work at fruit packing plants. They both fall under the new overtime plans. They and other workers had their hours cut to ensure that they could not get overtime(now and in the future). The place is going to add another shift.
So I guess that's how Bush is going to create new jobs.
In addition, MILITARY VETERANS who have the 'equivalent' of a four year degree through military training or experience can now be denied overtime pay. What hair brained moron thought up that.
Bush and Cheney are helping their other rich friends stick it up the ying yang of America. They don't care about anything other than the rich getting richer. This is a thinly disguised attempt to pay workers less money for more time working. Your boss can stick a "administrative" tag to your title or declare you work a "special" program or project and you will not recieve overtime. The new law has quietly went into effect already. They are trying to keep it quiet till after the election till it's too late.
As for voting them out......HA...HA...thats already rigged, like the last election. We didn't vote those guys in, neither did the so called Electoral College, the Supreme Court did. Remember those people? The ones appointed by Bush senior?
I have to admire how slick these guys are. They claim they are increasing the number of folks who are eligible for overtime, but what they are really doing is making it so a whole bunch of folks won't get overtime, and another shift of VERY LOW PAID-workers will be added. This improves the job numbers just in time for the election-SLICK!!
You know they are good when John Kerry's one clear advantage over Bush-Cheney-his military service, combat, medals etc-is turned into a big negative.Charlie

Maybe it was the idiot-democrat candidate who "voted" Bush in in 2000. All Gore had to do was ask for a recount in the entire state, instead of select few counties. Funny how all the recounts show Bush winning FL easily. But let's not talk about that.
How about:
"Kerry/Edwards: When you are full of it, you need two Johns"
"It takes a Kerry to burn a village"
"I actually did vote for John Kerry, before I voted against him"
"John Kerry makes Neville Chamberlain look like Winston Churchill"
"Flush the Johns, Vote Bush/Cheney"

"Bush makes any choice look better "

I never got overtime anyway so this doesn't affect me. On the other hand Unions have contracts and won't be willing to re-negotiate until the current contract has expired.
Many companies would rather pay for overtime to experienced workers then train new workers that don't have the experience and since they would have to pay for healthcare costs that come with new workers wouldn't it make more sense to just continue to pay overtime? Instead of paying both healthcare and training of inexperienced workers?
If you don't like the deal your getting then get out of what your doing or move to the competition

I really don't get the logic you guys are using here. From what I have read,
the previous law only required that people making less than $250 per week
had to be paid overtime. I would assume that for people making minimum
wage, nothing has really changed for them.
Loafer, you say your friend's parents have had their hours cut. What were
they doing before, working 80 hours a week at straight time? I've worked
for some pretty cheap companies, but have never worked for an hourly
wage anywhere that they didn't give you time and a half for hours over
forty. As far as them adding a shift to get around the new requirements,
it looks like they will find a way to screw their employees regardless of
what the regulations are.
I've had sales jobs and salaried positions before, and they didn't pay you
any overtime. So what has changed with that?
What Blk808TitanSE said about choosing where you work makes the most
sense to me. A lot of non-union places match the wage of union shops
(but usually not the benefits) in order to compete for employees in their
given industry. That's competition in a free market society.
I would like to see some intelligent responses to this issue, rather than
a bunch of whining with no explanations, or alternate solutions. Is that
too much to ask for?
