How would that affect your driving?
I drive 30 miles each way, five days a week, and we are already paying a huge tax on fuel that is suppose to pay for our roads.

I only drive about 3500 miles a year, but this is another money grab. I expect it
would work this way.....low income people or those without a job, don't want a job
etc will get govt assist to offset mileage tax = income redistribution.
I drive ~ 20,000 miles a year ... this is going to hurt!

Unpucker your buttholes , gentlemen. A mileage tax would be in lieu of the gas tax forcing the hybrid and electric cars to pay their part of the wear and tear they put on the roads as well. Preliminary studies are showing that a mileage tax would be less expensive than gas tax on your average driver.

its not to force the 40 or so hybrid and electrics to pay "their fair share," obama has set forth much higher fuel economy standards for vehicles. better mpg= less gas bought for the same distance= less tax revenue collected from one of the govts favorite wells to get $ from. soooo, lets tax by miles driven so we can make the same or more money of people who drive even if they use less gas. btw, they have to be able to accurately calculate the miles driven per year... who is ready for that govt gps in your car? it is one of the more popular choices from big govt to make this work.

The gas tax is WAY WAY WAY to low why you ask?? ok here we go. The gas tax is 18.5 c a gallon and has not been raised since 1993. Now ask yourself does it cost more to repave a road than it did in 93? How bout plow a road or fix a bridge?? Of course it all cost way more than 93.
unlike a sales tax or Income tax the gas tax is not indexed to inflation and this poses a problem. there would be less of a problem if it was a fixed percentage like a sales tax so as the gas price goes up the tax does as well.
the new problem as one poster mentioned is that as the FEDs mandate higher fuel economy they shoot themselves in the foot on the gas tax. If you go from 15mpg to 30 mpg you have now cut the amount you pay in gas tax in half. You essentially gave yourself a nice tax cut by getting the new car.
The infastructure is crumbling at an alarming rate and we need to pay to fix it or just stay home.
it would be simple to just make it a fixed percentage per gallon but this poses problems as well. Why??? Well if your neighbor gets an electric car and drives down the same pot hole filled street you do guess what he paid to maintaine it? that's right 0 he pays nothing.
what about guys using bio fuel home grown or a propane conversion Yup, 0 gas tax collected. Plug in hybrids like the Volt will continue to grow in market share.
Everytime the guy who runs the DOT sees that add on Tv where people are talking about filling up their Volt once a month his heart skips a few beets and he probably wants to call somebody at Goverment Motors and ballistics on them
Your GPS will be part of a chip built into your future cars computer it will be undefeatable you will be walking, Ill wave on my way by and enjoy having the road all to myself.....
BTW they know where you are right now if they want to..... There is no escaping them or they as "they" have those silent helicopters.......
Do you have Fast Pass for toll booths?? ....... They and them know all about your driving already you didn't think they really came up with that for your convienance did you?? Think it through.........

Well here in CA, where the state pays for the roads... the TAX is 48 cents a gallon. Do I think that is WAY to much ... you bet!
