I prefer the Smith & Wesson model 500. http://www.firearms.smith-wesson.com...sw_activeTab=1

It is WAY more powerful than a 44 mag. This would come in handy if the bad guys coming into your house are wearing body armor. It would also come in handy if you flee the bad guys in your car. If they follow you, you can fire some rounds right through their engine block to disable their vehicle.

S&W 500 is a quite a stick.

I already have a 44 Mag loaded with Garret 310 grain Hardcast (which will defeat body armor), but if i went hunting in Alaska I'd pack a .454 Casull (derived from .45 Long Colt, which a Ruger Super RedHawk 454 can also shoot) instead of the S&W 500.

We're looking for our 1st semi-auto (for the times when "speaking softly" yet firmly don't cut it), but we remain fans of the revolvers.

I've got the Springfield Armory XD in a 9mm. And love it! a buddy at work has got two, one in .40 s&w and one in .357 sig. Both shoot very well. All are easy/comfortable to carry. One of his (.40) is the subcompact, VERY easy to conceal.

Of course, we both have our conceal carry permits.....

Of the pistols you've listed, I'd choose the 1911. But, you may want to take a look at the XD series. And Glock just has such and awkward grip angle, it's not "natural" for me.

Good luck!

Since it's for your wife also, I'd go with the Glock. I don't like the trigger
pull on them, but their accuracy is superb for that type of gun.

If you decide to go the 1911 route, spend a few dollars more and get a
Kimber rather than a Springfield. Compare the slide to frame play in the
gun store if you want to see the difference. I used to have a Springfield,
now I own two Kimbers. I met the regional sales manager for Smith &
Wesson last week, and he showed me a new high end 1911 model they
are introducing. It was $2400, and wasn't as tight as my Gold Match
Kimber.

I wouldn't consider the Ruger or Taurus unless I was trying to save money.
Check out the Para Ord's with their new LDA system. Much better trigger
than the Glock, and excellent accuracy. They even make them in a 'limited"
with match barrel and bushing.

pluckyew (love the handle, btw)

You don't mention specifically whether this pistol is for self-defense or for fun. For fun and games, I really like the way the 1911 clones feel.

However, for self-defense, the Glock has no equal. While many dislike the trigger on the Glocks, it is the SAME EVERY TIME. That is more important than most people realize. Shooting a firearm is very much like a good golf swing. Consistency is KEY.

Also, Glocks are DEADLY RELIABLE. I've put more than a few thousand rounds through several types of pistols, including Glocks in various calibers, 1911 variants, and Rugers. I've NEVER had a mechanical malfunction with a Glock. Only bad ammo or operator error (failure to seat the magazine in my particular case) has caused one not to fire. The only way, IMHO, to have greater reliability is to buy a revolver.

The above are my opinions. Everybody has one, and this issue has been hotly debated in the past. My one piece of advice, especially if you are planning on keeping the pistol for self defense, is to have some professional training for you AND your wife. Just knowing how to shoot safely when going to the range and having to do it when your life or that of a loved one is at stake are two entirely different things.

Good luck
Dan

For self defense, keep it as simple as possible. Glock, XD's, S&W J frame, etc...I've carried a lot of them, but I will have to say that I keep going back to the revolver--it's small, light and functions flawlessly. the only downside is the ammount of shots (5-6), but if you are trained sufficiently with the weapon, you will be able to reload (and hit your target to begin with) effectively. Whatever you choose, make sure it fits with your comfort and skill level (and hers). Good luck.

I too like the Glocks, and own a 19 and 21. I shoot the 19 all the time, and th 21 rarely. Additionally the XD's are good pistols too I have the XD-40 and the XD sub compact in 9mm both good competitors with Glock. Rugers are extremely reliable, but are big and bulky in comparison to other pistols. 1911's are also reliable, my springfield is a great pistol, but as with all 1911's they're limited in ammo capacity.

Go rent/shoot em all and decide for yourself. Also consider cost of ammo. 9mm ammo at walmart is $10.69 a box around these parts. 45 ammo is double.

Go over to Glocktalk.com and check out their forums for additional info.

Has to be a 45?Sig 220.40 cal glock 23,27 Sig 229

I would choose the Glock from those offered, but it has a huge grip (if it is the full sized Glock 45)-could be pretty awkward for anyone with less than large hands.
The 1911's have nice "hand feel",but you have to remember to **** the hammer,or release a safety, and the trigger pull(on a good one)is pretty short-could be a problem .Further,Lowering the hammer on a live round can really be an adventure-don't ask how I know this(yeah,I know you shouldn't,but most folks do it anyway).
If price is a paramount consideration get the Ruger,or a used Glock,Sig.Don't get the Taurus.
Consider the Sig 220.It has a nice normal sized grip, hammer drop feature, nice longbut smooth double action 1st shot,so accidental discharges are close to imposible, and it is extremely reliable.
Why not consider a 40 or even a 9mm??The 45 has no advantage over the 40,and the better 9mm rounds are pretty good.Ok,the 45,in many loads, will penetrate more of anything, but that usually isn't an advantage, and if you are shooting in your house,it is a disadvantage. The 40 carries more rounds, and it has at least as good a record(one shot stops). The recoil on the 45 and the 40's seem a lot alike to me,so I really can't award the 40 points on that(but most say the 40 "kicks "less).
Consider the Glock 23,27 or the Sig 229.Charlie

I recommend the Springfield XD for what you have in mind. Best bang for the buck, little maintenance required, very easy to shoot well.

I vote glock 21 of your choices- most reliable. I fired 1300 rounds through mine last weekend. no hiccups. every 1911 clogged or jammed at least 4 times. If you want a light trigger, you can get a 3.5 pound for the glock and it goes in in about 30 seconds. unless you and she have toilet seat size hands, I'd go with a 40 cal glock, maybe a 9mm. data I've seen on the web on hundreds of one shot to the thorax kills demonstrated that 32 hollow point on up to 45 hollow point had a 90 percent kill rate while hard ball ammo of any caliber was about 60 percent. so get a caliber you can afford to shoot, shoot a lot, and pack it with good hollowpoint when carrying.

shoot for the heart or eyes bucket. any other hits, they can still run you down if they are serious. read this story and you'll want to carry a rifle:

http://www.thegunzone.com/11april86.html

in any case, a handgun is a puny weapon and you really can't count on it to get you out of trouble so be cautious. juma

You really need to check out the Para LDA's, Charlie. It really overcame
my mental aversion to carrying a 1911 "c.ocked and locked". And it's a
metal trigger, not plastic.

Special Forces might have to use hardball.Gov agencies??

I not sure that Special Forces guys use 45's.If you mean "Green Berets",I bet they use 9 mm just like the rest of the army.Government agencies??Most police departments use the 40. If you mean Fed agencies,I really don't know what they use.
Now if you are talking about Swat Teams, and armed forces elite teams-Delta,Seals etc, yeah,I think you are correct.I have seen them with what look like modified 1911 style 45's.My guess is that they soldiers might be limited to hardball (so they prefer a bigger hole),and the Swat and the Soldiers want max penetration, and aren't very concerned with overpenetration since they usually know where their bullets are going. They are also experts and will shoot you more than once, so they really don't worry about 1 shot stops-the second and 3rd bullet will hit the target so quickly it won't matter that the 1st might not immediately incapacitate the "woundee".Bottom line-they want penetration to defeat clothing, wood, glass, sheetmetal etc.
For home-car self defence the 40 or a 9mm with the right bullet is just as good, and you can have 1.5 times as many shots. In most "street shootings" by civilians(and cops) most bullets don't hit the target-more ammo is a big plus.
I sometimes wonder about the SWAT guys with their race gun type 1911's.I think"fashion"- not data-dictates their choice of weapon. The more accurate you make a 1911,the less reliable it becomes.Once you dial all the play out of these guns, they tend to jam.You can get a very, very crisp, light trigger pull with the 1911's and you can make them supremely accurate, but there are better calibers and guns(glock or sigs in 40 or 9mm) for amateur self defense.Charlie
PS I'm not saying the 1911 isn't a very good self defense pistol, just that there are better ones.A plain Jane well shot in unmodified Gold Cup(or the Kimber-Springfield equivalent) is pretty nice in that respect-nice trigger, plenty accurate, but still reliable.I think they once had problems with that barrel bushing, but that has been resolved.I doubt that Colt actually makes their own guns in their own factory now,but maybe they do.

Yes 9mm, Nato compatible, makes it easier to find ammo on the battlefield.
Changed from colt 45 to Beretta 9mm back in the early 80's.
Can't tell ya what they use now, been out of the Business for a while.
