Someone please feel sorry for me........

My hydrostatic transmission went out on my John Deere riding mower and it's gonna cost me $850.00 to get it fixed.

The only thing I'm thinking about is how nice of a toy I could have got for $850.00.

damn bayou, that's bad luck, I was a john deere service tech in the late 70's and only had to repair a couple of hydrostats. they are usually very bullet proof.

Do they still repair those things or swap it out for a remanufactured unit?

It's a Scott's model 1642 built by John Deere and purchased at Home Despot. Individual parts can't be purchsed for the tranny. It is sold as a complete unit only. I paid over $1,700 for it.

Nothing runs like a Deere.

That may be true but I damn sure know what I'd be doing. I'd take that $850 and go down to walmart and buy me a pretty nice Murray for about half what you'd pay for a Deere. We've had a Murray for years and I've cut a helluva lot of grass with that thing and the only problem we've ever had is (now get this!) is with the brakes. Had to be real careful going downhill, especially since downhill lead right out into the road where idiots fly by at about 80 all the time. Anyway, just my 2 cents. Maybe you're a diehard Deere fan.

By the way, after a couple years we finally decided to fix the brakes on that thing...

My Yazoo Red Rider will probably have to have tires this year. Only had the thing about 16 years. Are you sure its the tranny, Bayou?

My mother has an Ariens mower that I've had to change that pulley with the rubber around the edge of it. She managed to rip chunks out of the last one, then it wouldn't go......hope you're not getting shafted.

I think i'd get a second opinion. I just looked at jd parts website and although i couldn't pull the scott parts up on it i did check some other jd branded models and they are still selling hydro parts for them. Surely they didn't just build that hydro only for scott.

Ahhh that's the problem, you have a John Deere wannabe.
I have a John Deere 275 GT that I purchased over 10 years ago, it also has the Hydro. Transmission, so far not a single problem.
I still hate it for ya, hope you get it fixed soon.

Dolphin2, My Murray Select 40", 12.5 hp rider was $850.00 new! It's 7 years old. It loses a tiny bit of oil now and then, but never enough to spot the garage floor.

Dolphin1 is the truck by the way.

Agree with being lost without the riding mower. Mine is a God send when it's 1000 degrees outside with 1000% humidity and the St. Augustine grass is knee high. I will sit in my garage and watch the folks with the push mowers pushing as hard as they can and not going anywhere. I will buy another one the day mine breaks beyond repair. It's second on my list of most important to me, right behind AC.
