Question Honda Accord Hybrid

I test drove the Honda Accord Hybrid today and really like it. I'm looking for a car for my wife. Should I pull the trigger and buy one?

All of them are essentially equipped the same - V6, leather, heated seats, dual climate controll, Home Link, 6 disc CD, 8 way power seats, telescoping steering wheel, power windows, and more.

The hybrid has more hp than the other Accords. All this can be had for about the same price as my Titan- about $30,000.

The only thing I didn't like is that the car doesn't come with a spare tire.

That depends. Does she want a hybrid?

Kinda pricey if you ask me but so what, if you like it maybe it's worth it to you, not to mention what you will save on fuel at these prices. My perception is even now they are in low demand so you could prolly get it for a lot less than what THEY are telling YOU. I always liked honda. Great quality, engineering and service. GOODLUCK!!!!!!!!!!

I was looking into those also. If I remember right, you're paying about $6,000 more for only 4 mpg more than a regular accord. If gas mileage is what you're looking for, I'd recommend the Civic over the Accord and the Toyota Prius over either one. (The Insight has the best gas mileage but I couldn't force myself to drive one of those, Chili Palmer not withstanding.)

I'd get the standard V6. What would make me nervous about the hybrids is that nobody is going to be competent to work on them until they're more common.
Just reading the stories about stuff getting misdiagnosed or poorly repaired on regular vehicles would be enough to send me running from something like the Acccord. God, the thing shuts the engine off every time you come to a stop and starts it back up when you hit the gas. Just wait until some sensor wigs out on that. I'd also dread replacing the batteries when they're due. I thought I read they're estimated to last 5 years. Probably die and sock you with a $2000 replacement charge right when the warranty runs out.

What a combination, 37 mpg and 255 HP.

It sure would be nice to have the best of both worlds. A car with power and good gas milage.

I was on the site and used the Gas Calculator . If we do get to $2.50+ this summer, it sure would make sense. The resale on Honda Accords are great too(with or without the hybrid).

Not sure how you could go wrong if she's on board and that's what she wants too...

This is true but you are getting 255 hp instead of 140 hp and 4 mpg better.

I would not get the hybrid. I just bought 4cyl for myself....because I would stay away from Honda auto v-6 trannies...they are notorious for blowing up.

That being said, I had an 03 v-6 that got 35mpg on the highway....get yourself the v6 and keep the extra money for mods.

The 4cyl I have no has been getting something in the neighborhood of 40mpg @ 55mph.

I bought my wife a 2004 Accord LX September of last year and so far, knock on wood, we have had no problems and get about 35-37 MPG at or about 65 mph.
I paid $16900.00 and the dealer threw in the Honda OEM spoiler for good measure.
By far the best car for the money.
I also like the fact that I don't have to worry about changing timing belts every 60K miles!
Just love the looks:

I believe performance wise the Hybrid is actually faster than the regular 4door v6 too. WOW!

Loaded 4 cyl for $6000 less-3000 gallons of gas-

You can get the loaded 4 cyl-EXL side curtain airbags etc-for $21000+.The mpg is very, very close. The Honda Hybrids don't use regenerative braking,so they aren't going to give the spectacular(honest 35 mpg city of a Prius) mileage of a Prius.I think the only advantage is that they combine an electric motor with the gas motor. You wouldn't think this would improve mpg at all,but it does.I think they also use another trick, and keep the intake valve open much longer than normal to decrease pumping losses.I could be wrong on this, maybe just Toyota does that.If total cost is a big concern, get the 4 cyl.You could never make up the $6000 price difference. If performance is the main concern-the Hybrid is the way to go.
Luck,Charlie

True, but so what...it's a freaking Accord. I don't understand racing a family car...maybe it's just my mentality.

I'd definitely hold off on hybrids until they actually make sense.

Geez, always racing! I never insinuated this car should be raced, just stated that it is faster than the normal accord. With respect to hybrids I have been turned away in the past by their lack of performance (ie: fun to drive) so this was an interesting anomaly to me.

I wasn't saying that you thought they should be raced. I was just coming from the angle of not being worth the extra money since the performance gain really isnt THAT much, especially since the 6spd MTs don't come in hybrid form.

Also, the comment about racing wasn't me condemning racing, it was me saying that it's a friggin accord. Race something worthwhile. ;-)

Before purchasing, head down to the VW dealership and drive a Jetta diesel, or PAssat Diesel. They do not have the HP of the accord, and the torque may be lower, but it kicks in at a much lower RPM. The chips for these cars easily bump up the standard numbers with a quick mod.
