Motorcycle guys

Anyone know of good places to look (other than ebay) for wrecked motorcycle bike parts? I assume tons of people have dropped their bikes while riding and there has to be someplace that has tons of "salvaged" bike parts. I know this seems vauge, but I am looking for some new front forks for my bike(99 gsxr 600) without the ~$800 price tag. I know there are better websites to post this question on, but I am already a member here and I frequent this site regularly.

You can pretty much look in the back of any motorcycle magazine and there are some listed there.

Another place to look is in the roadracing clubs all over the country. They all have their own classifieds sections. Here's a list:
http://www.roadracingworld.com/resources/organizations/
Shop around in there and see if anything comes up. You can usually pick up a set of forks for $300 or so. $500 for a set that has the good stuff in them. But your mileage may vary.

Wazzucoug, look no further. I can help you out. I work for M.I.D.S. one of the largest motorcycle salvage yards in the southeast. We an inventory of over 3000 motorcycles, tons of used parts, and a parts locater system that connects us with 350 other motorcycle salvage yards. If we can't get you the parts you want no one can. Check out our website www.midscyclesalvage.com. I'll sell you those forks for $400 plus shipping. Give us a call Tuesday 9:00AM-6:00PM eastern time. Could it get an easier than that?

WazzuCoug:

Be careful about buying any used parts you can't see or touch. So many people are out there to make a buck and if they where selling truly like new parts how can the get them and sell them for only a small percentage of the new replacement cost and still make money.
Bikes get crashed daily but if it went down the chances are most parts on the bike are bent or have stress cracks. It might look good on the surface but when ridden at high speed it will give you head shake which can be deadly.

do you need the full set of forks? Why not just rebuild them, replace only the parts that need replacing.

I dont really know what I need for sure. I recently laid the bike down, and I havent gotten around to taking it into a shop for a repair quote. The allignment is seriously off, and I assume the forks are bent. However, I could easily be wrong. A friend looked down the forks and made the comment he thought they were bent and needed repair. The only thing I know I need is a new Left air intake runner- That guy got smashed up real good. I am in a decent dillema as to whether to keep the bike and fix it up, or sell it off either fixed or needing some work. Either way I purchased the bike to learn on, and it served its purpose well.

Wazzucoug,
Your best bet for checking the forks would be to remove them from the bike. Then clamp the fork in a vise by the caliper bracket mounts. Place the needle/point of a dial indicater on the opposite end of the fork tube by the fork cap and spin the inner tube. If its more than a few thousandths out, they're going to need to be replaced or you can purchase inner tubes and seals to rebuild them(if no damage has been done to the lower legs). A couple more things you may want to check as well would be the front wheel and the lower triple tree. Front wheels in particular seem to be a bit fragile on these bikes.

I have a set of gixxer forks from an older model but still the same diameter.
gold valve emulators springs etc etc there ugly but work fantastic..
ehh actually since your a "newer" rider these might be a little stiff for you on the street.
I will keep my eyes open here, I run into some good deals fairly often!

Check out the yellow pages and call around. We found out that one of the largest cycle salvage yards in the North East is right down next to the Philly airport that way.

I know that most dealers will take down your name and number and let you know if they come across anything (around here anyway).

Try the sites that I play on. Sign in and post on them.
These guys have bikes that they raced and destroyed over time. The parts that they sell off are perfectly fine, it's what is left from the wreck in some cases. Some have spare bits that they are selling off due to getting out of racing or upgrades.
You may also find other sites within these sites.

I know that Sacramento has a number of cycle salvage yards. Check the yellow pages and I'm sure you'll find them.
