Big Bear or Mountain High this weekend

I plan to take my kid to Big Bear or Mountain High this weekend to learn snowboarding. Does anyone heading up there this weekend? Any advice for first time taking snowboard class? Is it worth to spend $ to take the class? My son is 7 yrs old. How much approximately for class and equipment rental?

Question Re: Big Bear or Mountain High this weekend

I'll be in Mammoth this weekend. Big Bear might be a little too wet. Check the snow reports friday b4 you take the trek out there. If you want to hit Mammoth though, let me know...

Are the lessons for you or your son? Or both?

Re: Big Bear or Mountain High this weekend

I went to Big Bear a few years back. Lessons helped. I think it was like $60 for lesson and pass for adults. I was the worse student there! I still was after it but I didn't die. I fell all over the place and decided it was the last thing I'm going to do. But your kid is a skateboarder isn't he? Their attitude isn't the same as us so I'm sure he'll do a great job and have tons of fun.

Re: Big Bear or Mountain High this weekend

just took my 8 year old nephew out there last weekend. he did great. but then again he was extremely excited about going and can't ever get hurt enough to BE hurt. so falling wasn't a big deal to him. if your son is the same way. then he'll just as great as JR was. but x6am is right. you should check the snow/weather report. im in gardena/cerritos...and its pouring pretty good outside. can't wait to go to mammoth the weekend after next though. are you gonna be there THEN x6am?

Re: Big Bear or Mountain High this weekend

The lesson will be for my son and me. My kid doesn't know pain and he has more energy than I.

How far from Orange County to Mammoth. It will be crazy on the mountain this weekend. I have been waiting for so long for the snow.

Re: Big Bear or Mountain High this weekend

Wells its 4.5 hours from Santa Clarita, so I would say around 5 to 6 hours from the OC depending on what time of day...

6 hrs is too long of a drive for me. I settle for Big Bear.

Re: Big Bear or Mountain High this weekend

lessons are deffenatly worth it. gear rentals shouldnt be that much but i cant remember how much. rent the gear befor you get up to bear. there are some places that rent everything for something like $20 or so. i havent been up there in a few years so i cant give you specifics on the names of the rental places, just stop at a few and if you find one reasonable just rent from there, but if you rent at the mountan it will be alot more.

Tyltan, if you have any knee pads around the house, I would suggest using them under your gear. it might help easy the pain....

Ya, I was thinking about that too, but what could he use that would help protect the tailbone?

Nevermind, the last thing we need to discuss is how to protect your arss!

Go have some fun and let us all know how you did!
