Computer Problem Need Advice

Got a dell desktop, got in brand new about 2 1/2 years ago all the goodies. It is a P4 2.6 with 60 gig HD, etc....When turning on my computer it will show the video card loading then the screen will go blank and the monitor will show no signal. Tried restarting and SOS.

I have moved the video cable to the regular slot on main board and still does it, at first I thought it was the VC but now I have no idea...

Any thoughts ?? Maybe the HD ?

Thanks

Re: Computer Problem Need Advice

Does it do this during startup? Try a different monitor maybe. Could also be your ram. I had a bad memory stick do funny things that stopped once I pulled the chip out. I don't see how your HD could cause your monitor to die. Try changing your BIOS settings to safe mode if you can get to that screen.

Re: Computer Problem Need Advice

Take your video card out, then try mainboard video out.

If it works...it's your VC.

First of all, did you do anything or install something prior to this? Try booting into "Safe Mode". If there is a display then you have a video card driver issue. You will need to reinstall again. Good luck.

Re: Computer Problem Need Advice

Depending on the monitor, you may need to reinstallthe driver. Probably not the problem, but it could be. The only other thing Iknow to try other than what has been suggested is trying a new video cable.

Re: Computer Problem Need Advice

First off, Dude you bought a DULL. Theres the first problem. If you arent using the on board video, try plugging into that one, if still nothing, you may have a bad motherboard (not that uncommonn for Dulls). If its only on the AGP, borrow or buy an inexpensive card, even without drivers, it will still run the monitor (just not all functions). If you are going to get another one, build it don't do DuLL. I built a screammer much cheaper. It smokes Dulls best for $1000 less. I'm running dual SLi 256mb boards bridged with an Athon 64 939socket, 3 GB ram, 610 GB HDs, I havent put in the dual core processor yet, still at 4200, but the 939 will accept dual cores in the 5000s with a front bus speed of 2000mhz, something intel can touch. As far a laptops, I bought a Toshiba Qosmio that rocks, no where near as fast as the desktop I built, but smokes most pre built desktops. After having two HPs that were absolute crap, I finally have a laptop thats decent. I do digital photography and it takes a bit of power to run the programs I use and process RAW files quickly. What used to take 3 min to render on a Sony Viao desktop with a 2.8P, the one I built does it in 28 sec. The laptop (1.8Centrino 1GB ram) takes 1min 48sec. The sad thing is I only have $1680 in the desktop with a 19" high res flat monitor, the laptop was $2K.

Like someone else said, try taking the AGP card out of the computer, and booting it up using the mainboard video conection. Before doing that though, make sure the BIOS is searching for the right location to get its video signal. Most of the time it will switch automatically, but sometimes they don't (especially the cheaper ones). There should be a video device setting somewhere in the BIOS, just switch that from AGP to mainboard, onboard, whatever the motherboard option is. Then try booting without the AGP installed. If it works, then the AGP card is done for, and its time to upgrade.

Re: Computer Problem Need Advice

Thanks... Yea it does it during boot. I did go into the setup menu and kept it there for a couple minutes and it booted fine. No matter what video source I plug into it doesn't work. I will try a new VC I can get them cheap and see if that works.
