Log Cabins?

I'm looking into possibly building a log cabin or buying a log home kit, I live in San Diego, Ca right know but, I'm moving back to Indiana, where I have land. I know they're a lot of work, but It's something the wife and I have always wanted, so if anyone has any idea on buying or building or any input/info on them, I'd really appreciate it. I'm not looking to build a huge house, just something small, under 2000 sq. ft. Thanks a lot for any ideas/input/info.

Re: Log Cabins?

there are alot of companys that sell kits, basically they build the house and its up to you to get it wired, plumbed, etc.

Jim barna homes comes to mind, check them out. my mom and dad went through jim barna about 15 yrs ago when they bought a log house. log homes are great, but just like everything else there are a few downfalls, one being upkeep, the wood really soaks up the stain, and you need several coats every year or two untill the wood soaks it up good, i painted every summer for 6 yrs, took about 1 full week to get everything. at this point 1 coat every 3-4 yrs. you could always hire someone to do it, but we found out pretty quick that didnt work, just cant trust someone else not to cut corners, so we did it ourselves.

Re: Log Cabins?

I saw this show about modular homes. My wife considering a custom, modular home for the 2 acres we have in AZ. If you go with a modular home/cabin, the cost can be pretty reasonable...about $100 per square foot more or less. Here check this out

Re: Log Cabins?

My brother in Central Illinois near the Indiana border is a dealer for log homes. He sells them and will also build it for his customers if they want this option.

He's been doing this for 20 years, so he's pretty good at it. You'll find that most dealers will sell you just about anything you want. It's only when you are looking for homes in the 5000+ square foot range that your options become more limited.

There are positives and negatives associated with log homes. Look into it some more and you'll quickly become educated.

Regards,

John
