Useless Gas Cost Data

Taking a look at the last presidential election map along with looking at gas tax by state I wanted to see if there was a correlation of how gas prices vary by state, state gas taxes, and state party affiliation.

I took todays state gas cost averages and put all of this together in the attached spreadsheets.

While blue states averaged $0.07/gallon higher tax than red states, blue states had $0.13/gallon higher gas prices over red states, and $0.04/gallon higher gas costs when subtracting out gas tax.

It was interesting to see how much state gas taxes vary , but it does not appear that lower taxes meant lower gas prices. In fact, I am now more confused that when I started this mess.

Re: Useless Gas Cost Data

Thanks. Some things about this look went against reason. How New Mexico had about $.36/gallon tax but a no tax cost of $2.74. Comparing that to Wisconsin with a $.51/gallon tax but a no tax cost of $2.49. Or how New York with $62/gallon tax but the no tax cost of $2.47. Are those differences all distribution cost differences or market driven?
