I see the yuan rising in relation to the dollar as a good thing...it will make it possible for US manufacturing to compete and good for the average joe who has to work for a living. Also, with the rise of the chinese middle class maybe we can finally export some stuff to them.
Only time will tell who is right eh?
One thing is for sure...china does what china wants...its been that way for thousands of years...and I don't see them giving two $hits about how what they do affects the U.S.
Yes - in this you are correct in that - "China will do and always has done what they want". Historically China's interest lies in their "Middle Kingdom" We are dealing with a Dragon that is no longer sleeping with one eye open - the beast is awake and growing at a double digit pace. However - a rising Chinese currency against our US Dollar will spell a larger trade inbalace for America and a lower standard of living for American workers who live in an economy that has no chance of growing as rapidly as China is currently growing. For the last 50 years we have exported our manufacturing jobs - and now we are going to pay for the privilage of having others do our "making things" for us. Watch and see how quickly this will unfold - and how fast China will continue to corner the world market on natural resources to feed that "Dragon" the has become quite hungry for western standards of living.
I say we all just need to get along. If we all could just concentrate peace everything would be just fine. We could all just climb a tree and hug!!

I think we need to put a "Glow" on them. We need to reel this crap in and regain some respect.
Been there - Done that! The US is the ONLY country in the world with big enough balls to use have used a Nuke (2 in fact) on another country. You can be sure that no one has forgotten that - and that they don't still loose sleep over the fact that we just might do it again to someone else just to prove we are still a super power - are not a bunch of wasbeens - and can still open up a can of woop-a** if we feel that we have no choice. The trick is to get what we want - a decent peaceful world that does not glow in the dark - without actually using the big stick on the little dogs snapping at our heals. This trick is usually performed successfully by good leaders - you can tell it is working when the morning paper arives without fallout residue on it.
Forgive me guys. I have read every last word of yours on this thread at least twice. I do not think I hold a strong grasp on this subject still. Really all I understand is that from certain China acts, they are raising the value of their money more quickly than we are? If I were talking about Car Audio Installation I'm sure I would sound just you like guys do right now. Unfortunately I didn't focus on everything else. So would anyone care to push this into a more simple explanation?

OK - simple version - Dollar looses value - imports cost more - gas and oil cost more - your paycheck buys you less gas, food, clothes, kids toys. You work harder to make up the difference. Our Government taxes your overtime - you take home less than before the overtime after taxes. You spend all your savings making up the difference to buy the same amount of food, gas and clothes. Yours savings are now gone - but our Government still wants more taxes - so you tap your retirement $$ - now you are working until you are dead of old age - nothing to leave the wife and kids. Trust me you don't need an MBA in Finance to realise - this is a BAD THING for the working Joe in the USA - I hope this helps clarify in laymans terms.

No problem man...passive/active/ohm/bridged/serial/ all make my head spin.
Okay...most currecies "float" on the free market...there prices are not set by the government although goverments do try to nudge them via fed reserve moves and trade agreements etc.
China does not float its currency and instead "pegs" it to the value of the US Dollar. 99.9% of experts aggree that this has caused Chinas currency to be artificially deflated or undervalued. The argument then goes that because their money is worthless they are able to export things at very low prices and this would in theory (although I disagree as to the extent) add to our trade deficit. In theory, if china allowed its currency to float its price would go up, its imports would go up, and its exports would go down.
In theory...
Roy has a different view...I'll let him explain his side of the coin.

Also talked about this thead is Chinas holding of US Dollars. It's fricken huge...like bill gates is a poor little homeless guy huge without a nickel to his name huge.
If china unloaded all its dollars tomorrow...the world would be in financial ruin.

Adavis is in fact correct in theory - if you go with the text book - however - the capitalist theory does not account for China's endless source of "free" prison and child labor that will never happen in the US - this being the case - we will never be able to compete on an equal cost basis to manufacture consumer items in this country to compete on an equal footing with China. Our prisoners watch color TV and lift weights, and our Kiddos go to school and play Xbox. In China they work assembly lines and don't get fed rice if they don't keep producing. Different set of rules make for an unbalanced playing field.
I tend to agree with your worries Roy...but only to a certain degree and here's why:
Chinas current ways only work if we're rich and buying tons of their crap. If our economy starts to falter...their prison labor camps will have nobody to sell to. This is why they have been reluctant to unpeg their currency.

I knew we'd find common ground here if we spoke on it long enough.

Adavis - but - Americans ARE rich and we do buy tons of their crap every day - and use it up - and fill the dumps with it - and buy some more of their crap - and in exchange give China our dept - which they will be happy to cash in and buy real assets - like American companys, real estate, and dare I say it - Politicians. Where do you think they bought all those nuclear "secrets" out of our Los Alamos labs that are not so secret any more. When we let our monetary polocy get away from us - we opened the door and turned off the burglar alarm to the American store. We are just seeing the tip of the iceburg - the problems are larger and lay deeper than either you or I are able to know with the information that gets published. I just have a bad feeling about this - the same kind of bad feeling that keeps me from going to work on days nut jobs are flying airplanes into buildings or setting off car bombs in garages. Call it basic survival instinct if you will - the piper will be paid - he always is. I just don't want to pay the piper out of MY pocket this time around.
You know, life is full of suprises! China will have it's own internal problems to deal with soon enough. (1) With the rise of the middle class in China comes a more educated, progressive and less tolorant "of human rights abuses" people! They will demand reform in the form of higher wages to support there higher standard of living hence forth there unto driving the price of there exports up, making them less attractive on the international market. You will also see the same social and urban decay we have here exceot 4 x worse. They already have and will continue to have the worst environmental mess on the planet, this will cost them $$$$ if they wan't to keep there folks alive long enough to produce omre goods! The chinese will become fat happy and complacent just like us, only we'll have had a 75-100 year head start and be much better at it! The only certain variable is uncertianty!
