High School Football Coach Makes $106,004

The head coach of a South Dallas high school makes $106,004 a year. I know I'm in Texas where football is king, but does anyone else find that to be revolting for a public school coach? He's Travis Wallis of Ennis High. Wow.

Re: High School Football Coach Makes $106,004

It makes me sick how infactuated with sports people are. People can name every player on a team, but cant memorize 1 of their civil rights or the constitution. And even better yet have no intrest in History. So we will be destine to repeat it. Im going off track here but, he is probably the highest paid teacher/principal in that school!

Re: High School Football Coach Makes $106,004

Quin Snyder, former basketball coach (and coke fiend) for the University of Missorui Columbia was the highest paid state employee. Yes its rediculous. Do my kids play sports, yes, strickly funded by parents. I won't say it Helinut. But do I think any sport shoud be funded by tax money, NO. Unless every kid that wants to play gets to reguardless of skill. Same thing with the band. These people can get out and fund raise or write personal checks to cover their kids activities. Our schools and Universities are just farm teams for the NFL and NBA. School should be centered on educating the mind, not creating players for the pros. My kids are in gifted programs, functioning well beyond their grade level yet they cut funding for these programs and build a new field house for the high school football team. Its sick.

Amen Stlblue! It is sick! I agree sports should be funded by the parents! And the real money put into education like the programs you spoke of.

Re: High School Football Coach Makes $106,004

Both my kids are very atheltic, but I put thier education first. I know you dont want to hear the H word, but both my kids are goalies, it is one of several sports they play, but its thier favorite and both are very good at it. It costs us somewhere around $4000 a year with travel and just odds and ends they grow out of. We have around $3000 total in equipment for the two and they are 9 and 7. They also play soccer, tennis, golf, snowboard, ski, cycle, etc. All parent funded........as it should be. All sports considered, .001% of all kids playing sports will make the pros, in hockey is .5%........you can't count on that for your kids future.

Re: High School Football Coach Makes $106,004

One of the local high schools here just built a new stadium (well, a couple of years ago) to the tune of about 20 million dollars. Yeah, it's a nice stadium with a Jumbotron and everything, but I become ill thinking about public tax dollars buying that. Even sadder to me personally, is that the high school is my alma mater.

Re: High School Football Coach Makes $106,004

The sports are the big money makers for the schools. That's why Olahoma Universtiy can pay thier head football coach $1 mil +!

I too think it is outrageous, but that's why they do it!

Re: High School Football Coach Makes $106,004

That's true, but this is HIGH SCHOOL! There's no doubt that in the world of professional college sports, men's football and basketball pay for the rest of the athletic department. But this is NOT college. This is paid for by the property taxes of the homeowners of that district. Another part of what irks me, is that we've had a school budget issue here in Texas for about the last two years. Where our legislators have tried during two regular sessions, and about 6 or 7 special sessions to get a working, consitutional budget approved for the State's school fund. Each of those special sessions cost us, the taxpayer, about 250,000 and our legislators accomplished nothing. Well, they did vote themselves a pay raise during one of those special sessions. Aaaghhhhh! I want term limits!!!! I'm absolutely sick of career politicians.

Ok, I feel better now.

Re: High School Football Coach Makes $106,004

The trend around here with youth sports is to hire a professional coach at the price range of around $1500 to $2000 a month. Myself and a few other dads put our time in for free and we compete toes to toes with some of these teams with professional coaches. We recently beat a team that had two former MLB players as their coaches.

Re: High School Football Coach Makes $106,004

I think that high school teachers, administrators and coaches who in some cases spend more quality time with kids than parents are payed way to little!
Some parents will pay big bucks for homes, cars, toy's etc.but, get real cheap when it comes to there own kids. Get some coach!

Re: High School Football Coach Makes $106,004

High School sports are self-subsidized in most cities and towns across Texas. The Ennis High football coach has won 3 state titles in the last 6 years. In terms of dollars, his 100K+ salary sounds outrageous, but the money that he has generated for that school goes well beyond what they will ever pay him. For every playoff game, the UIL forks out money to that school. They earn even more on gate fees, brochures, and refreshments. In this case, he is also the Athletic Director for Ennis High. You will not find another teacher or coach in that school that puts in the hours that he does nor does any other teacher generate the revenue for the school that he does.
In the case of new stadiums like Carbeaux was speaking of, the majority of that money comes from boosters and $'s generated by the sports programs of that school. Obviously, I don't know all of the details about the school you speak of, Carbeaux, but in all of the cases that I have ever been involved in, an endowment to the sports program was involved. Little to no property tax money was ever used.
I don't disagree with everyone's opinion about sports and how out of balance they can often be when it comes to education, but they definitely have their place in our school system. And if you suggest that all school sports should be 100% parent funded, then the education programs should not get to capitalize on the money generated by the sports programs. In many of your larger schools in Texas the dollars generated by athletics is substantial and always unmatched by any other extra curricular activities.

I think sports are awesome but they should pay for themselves. I think cities paying for huge stadiums is lame. The NFL, NBA, MLB all make some serious coin. They should find a way to pay for their own buildings. Same goes for high schools and colleges. Colleges are doing the right thing in my mind...using the big dollar sports to subsidize other sports and school programs.

Just plain silly, does that include his teaching salary, or is he a coach only?

Most high school head football coaches do not teach (especially if they are also the atheletic director). This may not always hold true in the smaller schools however. The smaller schools have lower budgets and are not always able to earn the same big money that the larger schools are capable of; and therefore, the head coaches often have to be on the teaching staff.
