Discrimination In Our Public Schools

last week my son who is 5 was to start kindergarden in Marshall, TX. we registered him way back in april bought all his supplies, uniforms, and tried to make this milestone as painless as possible for all of us (he is our only child).
my wife and him go to the school the night before to meet his teacher and take supplies upon arriving at his room they were told he is no longer in her class that he would have to stay in the library for up to 10 days while they tried to make room for him and if room wasn't available in that school he would be put on a bus ans sent to another school, if that happened we would not be told until we came to pick him up then we would have to go to the other school to get him. when my wife asked why she was told that the children who went to the head start program were given preference over all the other children because they were "underprivileged". upon calling the superintendant office she was told the same thing to which she replied thats discrimination, they said call it what you want your child will get a class when we have room for him. we asked what about the school taxes we pay every year, doesn't matter the other children come first. we tried to get him in the head start program but the income cut off is $14,000 per year for a family of 3 people, we missed the cut off by about $82,000. my wife was laughed out registration. i'm not a racist by any means, but are putting the blacks, mexicans, and white trash children ahead of mine because there parents are to lazy to get a job, i don't think so. so after paying a $500 out of district fee my son now goes to Harleton schools which is about 15 min from our home. they were more than happy to have him in the school. there test scores are better than the school he would have been going to and the class is smaller, 14 children per room as opposed to 33 per room in the other school.
anyone else have problems like this? anyone irritated by this like i an? thanks for listening.

We also give our immigrants more $ per month than our Vets!!!!!

In some ways I agree, understand the aggravation, and the problems with the public schools. I have been fighting with them for the past month. They solved that problem here, the headstart is in separate classrooms or buildings. I do take offense to them being white trash, black, hispanic comment. If you make so much money send him to a private school. I don't think your school handle the situation great, but my boys are going to headstart and by no means to they fall inthose categories.
My wife is a physician and I have my own business, we missed the financial cutoff by a longshot too. But headstart does serve other children too. those with other "disabilities" that don't get attention needed in the rest of the system including private schools.

Call your congressman and write letters and let them know of your outrage! It's the only way this crap will end!

Fritz, every school district is different. Some are based on income, some are not. He has a point, why do the children that have money, have to be left out? They offer head start here, and it is based on income. It is for the kids who's parents can't afford non-public Kindergarten, and is only a half day program. I do think it is sad that they bump a small child out, unless they are needy. He has his right to say these things, but needs to remember that not all poor people are blacks, mexicans, and white trash children, who's parents don't have jobs. At one time I qualified for these type of programs, and I worked full time!

It's based on income here too, but not just income was my point. To label all those kids as "trash" just pi$$ed me off.

I don't think there is a perfect solution, but if someone makes 100K a year and doesn't like the situation, fix it.

I'm sure there are plenty of private schools that would love to have your child. Again, I'm not saying that public system is 100% right or fair, but sometimes life gives ya lemons, or a whole basket of em, don't pucker you lips, make something out of them!

as for the white trash remake maybe that was a bit much and appogize if it offended you that was not what i was trying to do. as you stated your head start program is different from ours. the point i was trying to get at was your not going to put another child ahead of mine beacuse they are "needy".

Well isn't that the point, they are the ones in need, the ones without the ability to get an education otherwise.

Again, I think the handled it poorly, but don't discrimate against kids who have no control over their situation. Now when it comes affirmative action and colleges, that is a whole other story. Once you can fend for yourself, you should do just that! Handouts to people who can do for themselves I don't like, but kids are kids are kids. Just because you have a decent income, do you think that your child is more important to the school system or the world as a whole?

My kids go to private school. Now I pay for public (through taxes) and private school! I to was offended with the white trash comment!
