Re: Taurus PT1911 pistol Private party transfers in CA
first off, congrats on the taurus 1911...that's a hard pistol to find. If you got a stainless one, then I may become your new best friend. Those aren't even in production.
And... I'm in KS, but CA gun laws are a bit of a legend passed around at the range so I'll share what I've heard. In CA any gun must be "registered with the state" in order to get one from a buddy, you do not need an FFL... that's a Federal thing, and that isn't for private transfers. If you want to sell your buddy a hunting rifle in a wal mart parking lot, you're welcome to. It'd be who of the selling party to write up a bill of sale if the fella goes out and uses the gun for evil and drops it somewhere. Though it's not necessary, the police will thank you.
I've privately given my older brother and father gifts of pistols, and my Springfield 1911 is registered to Lord Knows who... those federal forms you fill out go into a fed database. In order to get information from this Database you must have a warrant.
Again, this is what I've heard. I'm not a lawyer. Also, the only states that will arrest you for not registering a gun with the state are MD and NY, where your FFL is required to send in two shell casings (they come in a sealed envelope in the firearms case and are shipped to the state before you even take the gun home.)
Call your state government and ask what to do...or track down your local FFL and ask them in person. They may say "we'll charge $30 for the service" but ask them "is it necessary under state law, I've heard in other states you aren't required to FFL a private transaction"
Good luck, and straight shooting.
