I found this very fitting. A lady at walmart that was trying to help me could barley speak english. So I asked for the store manager. I figured they would speak english.

I hate to be obligated to press one for english when calling. I remember when it used to automatically be presumed we knew english and that it would only prompt you to push a button if you needed spanish.
Funny thing. When we moved here in 1976, my mother almost got deported for not attending a mandatory English class. It took a while but after some red tape, the INS realizing that she was married to a US citizen, had already lived here before back in the 50's, and, the fact that she was, err, English, they finally got someone to waive the class for her.
What the hell has happened since then! I know many Europeans...Professionals who want to be here, hold important, skilled and techinical jobs who have had to literally jump through hoops for years on end in order to become permanent. There is no way the current illegals should be given what amounts to a "Free Pass" when so many others have had to work, and work damn hard for their residency. Ridiculous.
Call me a stick in the mud, but I refuse to speak Spanish to anyone, even though I know quite a bit. Even to my Brother in Laws' wife, who is Mexican. She needs to learn and assimilate....period.
Sorry, ranting a bit .
Cheers, Lee S.

Yeah ticks me off too. When I called sprint the other day I had to press 1 for english. Ticks me off. Even when I look at packages and stuff is on there in spanish too. grrrr
That pisses me off seeing the flag and stickers on their vehicles. I feel the same way if there so proud of there home land what the hell are they doing here?
Well lets not turn this thread into a bash latino thread. You can put whatever sticker you like on your truck and you can put whatever you like on your wall.
My father came here from cuba around 1956 just before castro on a work visa and stayed when things got bad in cuba with castro. He's never been on welfare and is a workaholic. He has owned four successful businesses. He knows fluent english and just last week became a US citizen. He wanted a passport to go to Costa Rica because a friend of his takes "business trips" down there and says the chicks are hott. Go figure. ??
I'm a Scotsman who emigrated here in 1997. I now have a green card. I have a Masters degree in Computer Science and an MA in Economics. It took me 5 years, $5000+ and literally weeks of my time to go through the immigration process. It is nothing short of a nightmare. Emigrating to this country legally is the single most frustrating, mind-numbingly complex and difficult process I've ever gone through. However, the choice to move to another country is not a small one. It's a life-changing decision. I consider the time and money spent to be 100% worth it and a small price to pay to be given the privilege of living here.
So I think it's not surprising that I have absolutely zero sympathy for the 'plight' of illegal aliens. If you're not willing to do what it takes to emigrate legally you do not deserve to be allowed to live here. If you're illegal now, do what it takes to become legal.

I was in CR about a year ago, it was a great place and i really enjoyed the trip but the unsettling part was when we got off the plane and went through customs there was nothing but "having sex with minors is a crime" signage posted everywhere...
I think English is going to be the primary language in China soon.
I'm with you all though, I shouldn't have to push 1 for english, it should be assumed and i should not have to sit through "para enspanol press numero dos"
I'm kinda glad ebonics never got off the ground, what kind of option would that be on the dial?
My brother is a graphic designer and his firm does work for companies like Home Depot. Every single package that is going to be put on their shelves now have to be in 3 (THREE) languages - English, French and Spanish. None can be any larger than any other which says that none are more important than any other.
Talk about a company bowing down to the issue and not standing up for the country it makes it money from.

I do alot of shipping online with alot of companies. What really got me was the FEDEX website when I went to login.Since they are an international company, when you login they ask what country you are from.I have 2 choices now United States-English, and United States-Espanol???.If I wanted Spanish I would have chosen Mexico. And choosing the country your shipping from mostly means what language you speak.Coz we have a guy that speaks German and he just out of curiousity shipped something out using Germany as country.Shipped no problem.
