Well I was at dads today and was drilling some metal. The bit started to get stuck so I started to reverse it easily and before I could move or anything, the metal came loose and wrapped around the bit and a piece caught my thumb nail and dug in and ripped it out completely. Hurt like crap!!! and still does.
Take good care of that, that's a lot of exposure to infection. I'm sure you're up to date on tetanus shots, but be careful. I'd get it looked at professionally. Oouch!

lol, funny.
i've been pouring a lot of peroxide on it and putting a ton of antibiotic ointment and keeping it covered good but i've got it getting some air right now
I heard that you should keep it covered and moist, so using an antiseptic cream under a bandage is good. The thing you DON'T want is for the wound to dry out! When the nail starts growing back, it will grow really weird and be pretty painful in the growth process. I had that happen once and it hurts really bad when the edge of the new nail growth is pushing on the rock-hard rough skin of the healed area. I had to keep trimming the dry dead skin away from in front of the nail growth to keep it from "digging" into the finger. Not fun....
Believe it or not,the best thing I found for something like that is to take 2 aspirin.
I have tried almost everything imaginable from alcohol to what-ever.
A friend said only the aspirin will help the nerve endings causing the severe pain from smashing(or in your case shreading) a fingernail.
It worked for me!

It's all good. It takes a lot to ruin a bowl of CrunchBerries.

Thanks, It won't quit bleeding right now so I don't think it will dry out but my skin was getting white around it and wrinkled around it, so i thought i'd give it some air for a little while. Now i have something to look forward to, lol. I'd say my brother never heard such a list of words and I tend to say a lot of the same things everytime I use the peroxide.lol
well, the good thing is that you kept the majority of your thumb... I've managed to take about half of my thumbnail off (similar oops) and the darn thing has never grown back the same... and I never really noticed how much I actually used my thumb until that accident, so I'm sure you will be reminded of that for quite a while during the recovery and healing....
