Maui Vacation?

Hey guys.
My wife and I want to take our delayed honeymoon vacation to Maui next year. From you experience, what month is the best month? We were thinking May but I heard today that May is close to hurricane season. I want to avoid the summer because kids will be out of school. Also, does anyone have any recommendations on what hotel to stay at (something on the beach).

Thanks,
Nick

Re: Maui Vacation?

Great Questions. My wife and I celebrated our 25th Wedding Anniv. there this July. Here is what I know. I can email maps and links as needed. I am a big scuba diver, so that painted my opinions a bit. The more I know about your hobbies (and your wife's), the better Ill be able to direct you.
  • The beach at Kaanapoli is broader than Waalia (please forgive my misspelling of names.
  • Waalia tends to be a bit less expensive w/ more night life
  • The book, Maui Revealed is a must when planning (now) and when there.
  • The best beach dives and Snorkling are at the Sheraton Maui at Kaanapoli.
  • Less expensive are the near by hotels on either side.
  • The older hotel on the "back side" (farther north?) of Black rock is going to be demolished soon and rebuilt- so rates should be LOW
  • Less expensive resturants can be found
  • Waalia is near the big airport, and Kaanapoli is nearer the smaller airport.
  • All chopper tours go from the big airport
  • Crowds are worst when school is out
  • Beat the crowds by going just before school's summer vacation.
  • Whale watching is a crowded time of year (winter)
  • The back side of black rock wasnt crowded even in July. The front side (where we were) was packed at 10am dialy
  • The rd to Hana trip is ALL DAY and may not be worth it.
  • There are a few great waterfalls near Hana- most are PAST hana and near the 7 sacred pools- START THERE if you go, and work back.

I stayed at the Sheraton at Black Rock. The renaissance at Wailea (not Waalia) had a pretty wide beach, but I didnt stay in that area, so that opinion holds less strength. The other pic is from my balcony.

May and October are the best months to travel to Hawaii

Re: Maui Vacation?

If you want to experience the real Hawaii then go to kaua'i. The other islands have been to Americanized but kaua'i still has a nice Hawaiian feel to it. If you are able to go any time then don't go in the summer. Go during October to March and you will get a chance to see big surf or see huge surf. You can sit on the beach and watch people surf 30 footers all day long.

Don't go to Maui, go to Kaua'i.

Re: Maui Vacation?

Just got back 3 weeks ago, we had the time of our lives. I have local friends that took me to the best spots. PM me if you want more info. As for what time of year, well I would say October was awesome, the weather was perfect. Good luck.

Re: Maui Vacation?

Maui hasnt been americanized just yet. Do it.....go for it!!! Any freakin day in Maui is a treat for all of your senses. The whales are coming through as we speak and will continue for the winter months i believe. The temp. is always about the same. I DO recommend the road to hanah. rent a jeep rubicon and have a blast. get out dive into a pool with a waterfall!!!! You will never regret it unless something really bad happened.

Re: Maui Vacation?

went to Maui in Sept. for my honeymoon. It was not packed at all during that time ( sept 17th to 27th ). May is a month shy of the big summer boom so you should be ok.

I stayed at the wifes timeshare place in Kihei, very nice quiet area but a bit of a drive to the more nightlife side near kannapali and Lahina. Depending on what your looking for more, not a lot of nightlife or a party area.

I dont know what Machado is talking about but Wailea is like the Beverly Hills of Maui, much more expensive of an area than the Lahina/Kannapali area. And there is no Airport near Wailea

I've been there a couple times, let me know if you have any questions about stuff there.
