Reminds me of an old story, told and retold by everyone who was there:

A couple of the mechanics at our place (John and Ken) were pretty wild guys. A friend of theirs (Ralph) would get totally wasted and then try to drive when he shouldn't be. (This was back in the early 70's when people were expected to be responsible but often weren't)

Knowing this, John and Ken took a jack and put his VW Variant up on blocks, but with the tires just enough off the ground so you wouldn't notice if you weren't looking too hard. So after the party is mostly over, Ralph goes to get in his car and 'ease it home.' He starts it, goes through all the gears and is just humming along right there in place, in the driveway, when John approaches from the back of the car, running in place.

He yells, "Hey Ralph -- RALPH!! Stop and give me a ride, willya? I'm too drunk to drive!!" So Ralph slams on the brakes, John climbs in, and Ralph goes through the gears again and hums along for a couple of minutes with John sitting next to him...

...until Ken has the rest of the people at the party out there to have a real good laugh at Ralph's expense.
