Knife Set

I would like to buy a good set of knives for my kitchen but I don't know sh!t about the different brands. I'm not really looking for one of those sets that come with the steak knives. Just looking for a good set for cutting meat and veggies. Opinions please....

Re: Knife Set

I have a set of the brand in this link, and I think they're pretty darn good. Mine are about 20 years old and have held up well.

http://www.jahenckels.com/

They're not cheap, but quality doesn't come cheap sometimes.

Re: Knife Set

2 years ago, we got a set of those knives sold on the TV that never need sharpening, yada yada yada.
I have to admit. They are pretty frigging good.
Brand name is showtime.

Re: Knife Set

I do have one Gerber kitchen knife. It's a carving knife. And it's quality is top rate as well. Comparable to the Henckels.

Re: Knife Set

I have the old traditional wood handled Chicago Cutlerly, wish I had gone with the Henkels Black handled units or comparable type from Chicago. They were still made in USA when I bought them. Just don't care for the wood handle being a hand wash only. Excellent blades though.

Re: Knife Set

We have Chicago Cutlery that my folks bought us over twenty years ago. Their set is probably 35- 40 years old. They have held up well.

Re: Knife Set

The industry standard is Wusthof Trident. These are the best balanced knives commercially available. They are the Snap-On tools of the culinary industry. They come in 3 different handle shapes. I prefer the standard design. They are not dish washer safe. Unlike cheap knives, they must be maintained, but they can be sharpened over the years. I took my ex-wife to court to get mine back. If anyone offers you lifetime sharp such as Cutco, run like you would from a lifetime oil change.

Re: Knife Set

Not trying to start an opinion war or trying to offend anyone that bought from a college student selling knives as part of a pyramid marketing program. If your Cutcos have served you well then congrats+enjoy. Try to sharpen them. They have a hollow ground edge. Wusthof is flat ground. It will dull, but it can be easily sharpened. Here is more info than you ever thought you needed about knives.

Re: Knife Set

Kyocera ceramic - they are sharper than steel and stay that way. You have to be careful with them as they will break if you abuse them.

Re: Knife Set

I'll second or third the satisfaction we've had with our Henckels set. Around $125 and we got 8 steak knives, and the obligatory 6 different types in various sizes (paring, boning, bread, etc.)

Re: Knife Set

I bought the Miracle Blade knives from the TV infomercial not expecting much from them but curious...

6 years later they are absolutely amazing...very sharp and durable, I would recommend them to anyone.

Won't break the bank either at less than $100 for the whole set.
