I do a little flying in and out of where that happened.
It's a scary place to be in the sky and I am always relieved to get say 15 miles away from the place.

Ya that airport isn't in the best spot, My dad crashed comeing out of that airport about 17 years ago. Him and a buddy where duning tuch-n-go out of there and they both didn't make it

The part where an observer states bodies were falling from the skies is a bit disturbing to me.

There isnt an operating control tower??? WOW......thats scary.

Actually, it really isn't that bad. Most small airports don't have a tower. Pilots are required to listen to radio chatter and make position/maneuver reports when in the pattern. Either the weather was worsening or someone wasn't paying attention like they should've been

It really sounds worse than it really is once you're up there. Trust me, when I first starting flying a Cessna at a small airport I was shocked when I learned about this...but then I got up there and even when it was busy, you could always see and know where everyone was

It was a really clear day.
Very hard to see other objects hurtling at you at 120 MPH, and it happened where the people entering the downwind leg from the south meet the people turning downwind to stay in the pattern.

Kinda sounds like the equivalent of blindfolding yourself and running across the interstate.

Again, that gets tricky (entering the pattern), but unless someone missed a position/manuever call or didn't visually clear before entering the pattern...

This happens hundreds of times everyday at small airports across the country w/o incident. But obviously it sucks the one time it doesn't go right for aviators

Well you can see out of the ****pit and if the oncoming traffic was telling you where they are, where they're going, and what altitude/airspeed they're flying, you're fine...
