The WRONG idea of MLK Day.

So today, my relief shows up at the fire station, he's a man of color(a black guy, african american whatever you wanna call it) that really likes to play the role from time to time. We have another man of color working at our station on monday's as well. So around 8 oclock when the shift change happens, my relief (we'll call him #1), declares that he and the other man of color(we'll call him #2) don't have to do any work today because it's MLK day, their holiday. Now I overheard this from the ff barracks and came out and asked "what did you say?" and #1 replies "it's MLK day brothas don't have to work today it's our holiday". So I get fired up, I say "isn't that a little racist?" He come's back with some dimwitted comment about how we(the white people) made it a holiday for them(the people of color). So I called him out and said that isn't even close to what MLK day is. I proceeded to give him a little history lesson, let him know that infact MLK did not do what he did for the betterment of the black community, but for the EQUALITY of ALL PEOPLE, black, brown, purple, you name it. Now of course the black community was behind him the most as they were the most mistreated at the time and he was of course a man of color himself, but if you read about him, he was truly out for equality of all not just a particular ethnicity. When I finished my diatribe, everyone was silent(mainly because #1 will pull the race card at any given time if he doesn't like what someone says) and #1 just kinda looks at me, then #2 stands up from the dining room table and says to #1 " yeah man what the hell is wrong with you, your the type of brotha MLK would have despised."
Sorry for the rant, and if I offended anyone with my choice of words to describe a certain ethnicity of people. But people who pull the black card when it's convienient just piss me off to no end. Have a happy MLK day, remember what the man did, and WHO he did for...EVERYONE!

MLK had a dream that one day his children would be judged by the content of their character and not by the color of their skin.

This is our hope, and this is the faith that I go back to the South with.

With this faith, we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope. With this faith, we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. With this faith, we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day.

And this will be the day -- this will be the day when all of God's children will be able to sing with new meaning:

And if America is to be a great nation, this must become true.

do a video search for Saturday night Live MLK paramedics to see a video of a very similar story. I would have posted the link but I dont have enough posts

As a mixed Brotha (White and Black) I do find this annoying. 1. the cat you just mentioned helps feed the common place stereotype that is out there today of black people. 2. like 37L1 mentioned MLK was doing it for all THE PEOPLE not just black folk. I guess you can cure ignorance, but you cant cure stupid.

I dont mean to hijack the thread but this story reminded me of a commercial I heard on the radio here in las vegas the other day. The commercial was for an animal shelter and they are having half off adoption fees for black dogs and cats today.

Today is not even his birthday, just another day for the federal govt to take off. MLK did alot of things for Racism but he was no angle. Glad he made an impact on society and I'm glad to get a day off in his name but thats about it.

Yeah getting a day off is all I care about...always a good weekend to squeeze in some skiing
