For All That Ails

I saw these little things at a buddy of mine's house this weekend. Guess they did things a bit different a long time ago????

Just remember that Coca-Cola was named that because originally, one of the main ingredients was cocaine. Funny what happens over time. The good stuff gets banned and the bad stuff gets sold daily.

Re: For All That Ails

Arsenic was an ingredient in Victorian fly papers. When soaked in water, it would combine with the water to create a deadly liquid that was easily disguisable in beverages and food. Arsenic was also popular due to its easy availability in rat poison and insecticides.

Up to the 1940s, arsenic was successfully used to treat syphilis; it was a key ingredient in a compound named Salvarsan. It has also been given to leprosy victims and sufferers of yaws (a contagious tropical skin disease).

Arsenic is used today to remove color from glass, as a growth promoter for livestock, as a metal alloy and as a preservative in taxidermy.

I would say it was probably a part of a homemade pesticide concoction for roaches, mice, bugs, etc.....

Re: For All That Ails

Well, the cure for syphilis is just give them an overdose of arsenic.... At least they don't die from syphilis!

Re: For All That Ails

When the cups are full, you tend to not notice the flowers as much.

Re: For All That Ails

A friend of mine has a leach jar from an 18th century doctor's office. I always thought it was kind if unique. She brought it Antiques Roadshow on PBS. Turns out leach jars are fairly common and it wasn't worth more than $100 to $150. She didn't even make it on to the broadcast part of the program.
