I can only speak from my own experience but here's what happened to mine. My neighbor had two Great Danes. She let them run loose and they would come on to my property and drench the rims on my horse trailer. The trailer had white painted steel spoke rims. Urine is acidic and it collected in the seams where the spokes meet the round portion of the rim. The areas where they meet rusted so badly that two of the rims needed to be replaced and two needed to be sandblasted and repainted.
I know everybody keeps thinking it's just a dog peeing on the rims, what the hell can that hurt? But if you had have two tires taken off the rims, sandblast and paint two rims, replace two rims, and have four tires mounted because your neighbor didn't give a damn about your property you'd think differently. I found that the solution was a Benjamin pellet rifle. Two pumps are just enough to sting the crap out of the dog without injuring it. The dogs learned very quickly not to come on to my property.

I know I would be pissed off if a dog used my wheels like a fire hydrant. As for damage, it depends on the wheels I guess. I can easily understand damage with threaded spoke wheels. From my perspective, a typical winter with the road salt brine constantly sprayed through the alloy wheels will eventually damage the wheels to some degree, but that is a lot of salt water over many years. Chrome wheels will not survive long. If this case is about a single spritz of urine, the rims and tires must be pretty fragile, that or there is an odor damage that can not be removed.

Thought they were strays and didn't belong to anyone.

So when they were on your neighbor's property urinating, were they then the neighbors?
J/K. I think your relatives were looking after the dogs and that's why the court said they were theirs.
How are they going to get rid of the dogs??? Hope you can find them a home, sorry about the $500. Must be covering "damages." Is it going to be tough sledding between neighbors now? If it is that's a shame too.

The amount of money claimed or awarded doesnt constitute the pissing match between the people. Time off work, gas, etc......come on???? Just shoo the dogs off and be done with it.
