I've heard of stealing tailgates but...

My buddy walks out of work yesterday morning after having a horrible night at work and his night got even worse. Looks at his brand new 2008 GMC Sierra and somebody stole his taillights! Evidently there are no aftermarkets available (i checked lol) and every junkyard from here to New Orleans doesn't have em. So the only option to get a new set is from the stealership at 150 bux a light. Guess somebody didn't have 150 a light lol. Right after he told me I ran outside and locked my tailgate. Damn I'm glad I bought a Nissan....

Poor guy.
I trust you didn't tell him he should have bought a Titan?

Actually i think there are a set or two that are popping up. But the price is the same as or more than the dealer's price. tell him to check around.

Yeah I kinda slipped in the whole shoulda bought a Titan thing as I was locking my factory installed tailgate lock and telling him that he should go buy a lock for his hehe. And I'm gonna do a little more searching for some aftermarkets in a little while before he goes to the dealer for some. I only checked a couple places quickly last nite

Re: I've heard of stealing tailgates but...

Tailgate theft is quite common, even to seeing a half dozen taken at a time from parking lots, like ride-a-long. We read of it here all the time. Get a lock for your CAT while you're at it. They go like hotcakes too.

dont know why they make it so easy to take them, i know why the tail lights are easy to get out but doesnt make any sense to make the tail gate easy to get off

Because Nissan GIVES me a tailgate lock straight from the factory. If the tailgate is locked, the taillights stay there. If you wanna put one on a GMC, you gotta go to the store and BUY one.

And about the cats, that must be getting more common too, because when we went to the dealer to order his new tails (which were harder to get than you'd think even from the dealer) they asked if his cats were still there lol

It didn't used to be much of an issue. Traditional design is good for those who take the bate off and use ramps to load heavy equipment in construction. It works well as an assembly technique, just not theft resistant.

Stolen taillights though, that is the first I read of that!

The days of an old beat up tailgate looking like a proud battle scar are over. Todays trucks have to look like Caddys, all the time.

I looked for one after I read that article on it. I can't seem to find one.

Do cat locks exist? Can you point me to one?

WTF is going on these days? Pretty soon I'm gonna have to tape my sack to my thigh so nobody steals my nuts!

that was partly my point, what good does it do if you locked it AFTER the other lights were stolen
