Re: whats a good job out there??

Move up here to Alaska and work on the North Slope oil fields. An aquaintance of mine was a car salesman and hired on with a subcontractor for a major oil company. They paid to train him to get his CDL and equipment operators license. Now he works 2 weeks on/2 weeks off and is raking $80K a year...

Re: whats a good job out there??

If you have a degree in Civil work and you're a carpenter you might look into drafting and design. I started out as a carpenter, took some drafting classes and went out looking for jobs from the people I knew in construction, in the meantime I'm working on my civil engineering degree. I'm in Florida too. Yes we had a pretty bad hit right at the end of the year, but after switching over to commercial work we're starting to show a little money.

Someone said something about equipment operators, I did that last year and it's a pretty good job if you don't mind the sitting. I already knew my way around a lot of equipment and started out at 50k a year with full medical. Most jobs start at about $16/hr for an oiler or truck driver.

How about real estate, specializing in custom lots. You would be amazed how the market does not affect the ueber-rich. My buddy is selling dirt in Kauai making big dough, about to move to Mexico to a new project, seems thats where most investors are now turning their attention to.

Re: whats a good job out there??

thanks for all the responses! 3 pages already. I am not really looking to go back to school yet, and no military jobs. I have a baby on the way so I dont want to give the wife a headache. I am not really into the idea with the blow jobs and hand jobs (unless its payin good ) I seen a listing for starting as a train engineer, in my area, seems good pay.
I would like another construction job, the boss I have now is kind of a dink. The people you work with make all the difference in the world.

not sure what education level it would take to work there but sounds interesting, I took a tour there years ago, neat place, not sure if they let you have tours any more? ( I live in south central wi )

Re: whats a good job out there??

Many companies will hire and train, you typically will start at a lower pay grade, but even janitors can make $4000/month up on the slope. There are dozens of different companies that do business up north, from big oil companies to all the support services and sub-contractors.

The main downsides to working on the North Slope are these:

* 2 weeks on/2 weeks off means 12 hours a day for 14 days straight and many guys work 3 on 1 off to stack dough faster.

* The weather and daylight conditions are extreme in the high Arctic. Winter you get 60 days of staright darkness which takes a long time to adjust to if at all. Also very low temps (barely getting above 0F on the highs) but many jobs are indoors. Summer you get 50+ days where the sun doesn't set, and lots of mosquitoes. Even in summer temps rarely get above the 50's for daytime highs.

* If you have wife and kids the time away can hurt.

The state is in the process of negotiating a natural-gas pipeline from Prudhoe Bay to either Valdez or into Canada's BC. When this project finally goes down it'll be the largest construction project in N. America and brings thousands of jobs to AK.

AK is not for everyone but you'd have to pay me copious amounts of money to live anywhere else. It is expensive to live here but the average pay is higher too. The winters are long here (even in south-central AK) but the summers make it worth it. 22 hours of daylight=22 hours of fishing, drinking, etc...I love this place.

Re: whats a good job out there??

if you're thinking of moving to florida, i would seriously consider learning how to deal blackjack and/or poker....they just changed the laws on betting there, and dealers are making bank....300-350 take home/day....i deal poker in arizona and am making about $30/hr. on average, i work about 6 hrs. per 8 hour shift and am break for 2....usually get a break about every 1 1/2 hours...everyone's always surprised at how much dealers make, and it doesn't feel like work at all....if you can find a place where you can deal blackjack that lets you keep your own tips, go for it....blackjack dealers where i work make anywhere from $400-??? a night, people have had $2500 nights and up....it's a really decent living for not very hard work at all....i'd consider it if i were you....not much schooling either...most dealing schools charge anywhere from $500-$800 to teach you, and they take about a month to complete...

I dont know if alaska would be for me, if I was by myself it would be a possibility. The wife is not to fond of moving that far away.

Re: whats a good job out there??

Start your own company...live hand-to-mouth for a few years, start paying yourself a "fair" wage, IPO the company and take out what you didn't pay yourself all those early years, then sell the company to a competitor and bank even more money. That's what I did. And although I still work, I do it because I'm too young to fully retire and I know I have enough "f**k you money" in the bank that I don't have to take crap from anyone!

Im not sure where your uncle is building sub stations, but I know the company I work for owns 95% of the transmission substations, towers, and lines in michigan, and the contractors we have building the stations get paid pretty well. They are union substation techs and get paid in the $30's an hour (not positive on the specific number) and get very good benefits. And like I said before not sure where your from but here in michigan it is very difficult to get a job as an electrician. There are thousands of union electricians signed in the books at the local waiting for a job.
