Re: does not deserve to be president

The American Flag is a symbol of our country-we all seem to agree to that.

But whether or not one should salute it is another matter. Some do not attach a salutation to it's presence with any deeper meaning while others do.

The flag, our country, our symbols are not created or protected alone by soldiers defending it. It is continually created and protected by the millions of Americans who live in this country, hard-working, honest, citizens, who make concious choices about how they live and raise their families, practice their beliefs, etc.

Obama's saluting or not saluting the flag should not be the reason why you do or do not vote for him. You vote for him or others because the candidate best represents your ideals and practices for the next four years.

This debate is what we should protect-the right to have an opinion and be free of harm in having it.

Right on the money!!!! WE as True Americans should continually protect this flag whether WE are in the military or not. Any disrespect, whether in action or in words should not be tolerated by any of US.

The right to have an opinion is protected by the constitution but if such opinion of utter disrespect (as Doola36) to the very symbol that protects such freedom, We, the people have the the same degree of responsibility to "continually protect" the dignity of such symbol (as the flag).

Re: does not deserve to be president

I attended a Marines funeral a month ago in Port Arthur , Tx. A Vietnam vet who I know is in Heaven because he spent his time in hell. I watched as the flag was removed from the coffin, folded and presented to his daughters. His daughters handled that flag like it was a baby. No one else could touch it. One daughter told me that her Dad was a hero in war and a hero in life. I just hope I leave that same impression with my kids when that Marine hands that flag to my kids. I guess you could say that that old flag just means different things to different folks.

Re: does not deserve to be president

Well all this rablerowsen got me curious as to the protocal for what to do when the National Anthem is sung or is it sang? I looked it up in Amy Vanderbilts etiquette book,(a super book to get your wife if your stumped for a gift) so hear goes;"At the sound of the anthem, whether the flag is displayed or not, you rise and stand at attention(facing the flag, if there is one), unless you are physically unable to do so. If you choose to, you may place your right hand over your heart. A man wearing a hat removes it and places it over his heart. Whether you sing the anthem or not, stand quietly and respectfully until the anthem is finished and you can be seated. Men and women in uniform give the military salute at the first note of the anthem and hold it until the last note. On another note when talking about the President of the United States, President should be capitalised not small case. Hope this helps to carify the etiquette issue.

Re: does not deserve to be president

Never heard of Amy. Must be from New Jersey. Sounds like she put a lot of thought in that. I guess I agree with most of Amys stuff but maybe have my own thoughts about what should happen. maybe just a individual thing.

Re: does not deserve to be president

Don't know where she lives, but the info she gives comes from The National Flag Foundation in Pittsburg Pa. You can believe or do whatever you want but the info is excepted etiqutte when it comes to what to do when the National Anthem is played.

Re: does not deserve to be president

Looks like Obama is learing from the Clintons

Quote:
Barack Obama now admits his involvement in this land deal was a mistake

James Bone in New York and Dominic Kennedy in London
Graphic: the house that Barack bought | The key players | Timeline: Barack and the billionaire

A British-Iraqi billionaire lent millions of dollars to Barack Obama's fundraiser just weeks before an imprudent land deal that has returned to haunt the presidential contender, an investigation by The Times discloses.
The money transfer raises the question of whether funds from Nadhmi Auchi, one of Britain’s wealthiest men, helped Mr Obama buy his mock Georgian mansion in Chicago.
A company related to Mr Auchi, who has a conviction for corruption in France, registered the loan to Mr Obama's bagman Antoin "Tony" Rezko on May 23 2005. Mr Auchi says the loan, through the Panamanian company Fintrade Services SA, was for $3.5 million.
Three weeks later, Mr Obama bought a house on the city's South Side while Mr Rezko's wife bought the garden plot next door from the same seller on the same day, June 15.
Mr Obama says he never used Mrs Rezko's still-empty lot, which could only be accessed through his property. But he admits he paid his gardener to mow the lawn.
Mrs Rezko, whose husband was widely known to be under investigation at the time, went on to sell a 10-foot strip of her property to Mr Obama seven months later so he could enjoy a bigger garden.
Mr Obama now admits his involvement in this land deal was a “boneheaded mistake”.
Mrs Rezko’s purchase and sale of the land to Mr Obama raises many unanswered questions.
It is unclear how Mrs Rezko could have afforded the downpayment of $125,000 and a $500,000 mortgage for the original $625,000 purchase of the garden plot at 5050 South Greenwood Ave.
In a sworn statement a year later, Mrs Rezko said she got by on a salary of $37,000 and had $35,000 assets. Mr Rezko told a court he had "no income, negative cash flow, no liquid assets, no unencumbered assets [and] is significantly in arrears on many of his obligations."
Mrs Rezko, whose husband goes on trial on unrelated corruption charges in Chicago on March 3, refused to answer questions about the case when she spoke by telephone to The Times

Re: does not deserve to be president

I would bet that would be standard attire in White House staff meetings.

Considering what we have been through the last 7 or so years, how much scarier could it get.
